Hi All, I am interested in getting into the IT field in a late age. I have always enjoyed computers. I am thinking of Network Manager. Now my question is, which is a better path? CISCO and Comp TIA academies or just getting a wuick degree? I am the typoe of person that learns better on hand and when I am only taking classes that are in the field. Meaning, I no math, physics etc. Just let me learn the insides of Networking. Suggestions?

The good news that you can switch your career at anytime; however, you cannot just jump into the Network Manager when you have no experience in the field. Especially, when you direct your guys to do certain...you have to know what direction you're heading to. The bad news that these jobs do require math...or at least minimum dealing with IP address calculation. Even though the Information Security field requires understanding calculation of loss/risk for security mitigation or accept risk.

CompTIA vs CISCO? Well, COMPTIA mostly refers to the beginning certification path that is not sponsor by vendor. Cisco in the other side is vendor based...but since the majority of enterprise networking routers, firewall, switches devices are CISCO. Therefore, their certifications are popular...if you have an CCIE (Cisco Certified Internet Expert), you can make up to $250,000.00 per year.

Hi and thank you for replying. I know that I just couldn't jump into becoming a Network Manager. What I am looking to do is to get into that field. To be honest, anything with computers has fascinated me since I was a wee lad. I guess I am just looking to be taught/trained only in the IT aspect. I don't need to make a lot of money but would like to earn a living obviously. I am really trying to find a a CISCO path (Example CCNA then CCNP then whatever the case) Like I said, I am just trying to get a foot in the door,

I would recommend that you for an associate's degree in computers with networking emphasis. The program will help you acquire networking skills as well as make you eligible for entry level jobs and help you climb up the ladder. Certificate programs can help you perform specific tasks but cannot give you a 360 degree view of the field.
