I have a master's in math education, which I use mainly for tutoring purpose. Currently I am considering getting my foot in the door of technical writing, since I love language and writing and learning/teaching new stuff. I checked out some writing positions where I get to apply math knowledge; however, all of them ask for a technology background. I am not sure if my experience with Microsoft Office and a few math softwares that I use for data analysis and research really count. What can I do to beef up my qualifications? An online certificate program in IT, such as the ones offered at University of Virgina, or Umass lowell, or another master's program, for instance, Education Technology Leadership from George Washington University?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

It just occurred to me, since I already have a master's degree, I could accumulate and use 18 credit hours in IT field to do technical writing and teach at college level. Certainly a graduate certificate will look much better than individual courses. Any suggestions?

You might do well to look into a grad certificate in technical or professional writing. You can begin by looking at

    Black Hills State University
    University of Central Florida
    University of Washington

The fact is that there are a lot of these sort of programs. Google it and you'll spend the evening sifting through a bunch. Make sure you're looking at grad cert programs and pay attention to costs for out of state students. Sometimes it's the same as in-state but sometimes it's WAY more.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am leaning towards a certificate in math+IT field. Kizmet, thanks a lot for your input!
