From a distance learning standpoint, that does look like a good deal when you consider it's only $295 per credit up to 12 credits (assuming the $7081 per year total covers 24 credits over each of two terms that year). If you're a masochist, you could pile on more classes and the cost drops dramatically.

From an apples-to-apples standpoint, I've read of Minot before and have yet to hear anything bad about them.

From an IT standpoint. . . this certainly looks like a solid IT overview for a nice price. Not too much depth technically, but it is certainly business-oriented.

it seems that the ones that are more technicially oriented usually required an undergrad in comp sci or IT. Do you think what they have in the courses would help me better prepare for positions like this:

    IT Project Manager
The IT Project Manager will plan, execute, and finalize IT projects while managing staff and third-party contractors to ensure completion of projects with strict deadlines and within budget.Responsibilities include analyzing needs, defining project objectives and overseeing quality control throughout the project life cycle, revising work plans as needed to meet changing needs and requirements, as well as designing and maintaining technical and project documentation. The Manager will also coordinate and lead activities related to IT strategic and tactical planning, policy development and implementation of all campus IT projects.
Required:Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field (Master’s preferred); Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification or equivalent a plus.Three plus years demonstrated experience in project management in an IT environment. Must have scheduling and budgetary management experience and proven track record for promoting and sustaining excellent customer service.Must be familiar with IT Governance and Best Practices.Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills required.

and the actual tuition for the program is located here MSU Business Office .... distance education students pay for all the credits, you do not get a break after 12 credits. the tuition is 307 a credit

Dakota State’s MS in Information Assurance (MSIA) also looks interesting.
MSIA - Master of Science in Information Assurance - Dakota State University

DSU college of Business and Information Systems: ACBSP accredited
MSU college of Business: IACBE accredited (e.g., no comprehensive exam degree requirement (?))

    seduflow,

Keep in mind you are talking about your career. In some instances any degree will work for those that have a significant body of work. For most, maximizing your resume is important.

I like both of these programs:

Purdue University - Information Technology Project Management MS Degree Online

Online Master of Science in Technology Management

In addition, one of my favorites is this one:

College of Business - Mississippi State University MBA in Project Management

The job you listed is one similar to that which I held a number of years ago. At that time I held an MBA and a PMP.

Eventually you will need bottom line skills in business, HR, various technical fiields, and soft skills to deal with adverserial people and controversial topics to succeed as a ITPM.

The Minot program is attractive but in my opinion is not the best option to provide a competitive advantage.

    Best of luck

There aren’t any current positions today that would be considered secure; not even government jobs. Mobility /transferability of skill sets are dynamics that can be augmented by the graduate degree; potentially adding value to the worker along with current /future options.

I can’t speak for all or even most graduate programs; however, the B-schools I’ve completed and am completing do require comprehensive exams. On the other hand and with a state university, my MEd didn’t.

    Kevin,

Thank you for the suggestions but the cost of the program is very important for me. The cheaper the better.

It seems its MSU vs DSU for me right now. MSU would still be about $1800 cheaper.

I understand. Given the two choices consider the DSU option as it should provide entry to the DSU DSc-IS should you want to continue with the potential for adjuncting.

    Best of luck,
