I'm in the process of completing the SANS (www.sans.org) GIAC in Security Essentials using online training.

I've been looking to obtain training in computer and information security online, but there are virtually no courses delivered online. Most are on-the-ground workshops. I cannot attend these because of my rather isolated location.

So you can imagine my delight when I found out that SANS Institute delivers its courses online as well.

They offer various levels of training in computer security. Pick one at your level and you're off!

The Security Essentials course is great for a relative beginner in computer security. It builds up a strong foundation in the basics. There are 18 modules, each followed by an online quiz. Finally, one needs to submit a five page researched report covering an area of computer security. This is then followed by the final exam. I'm currently working on the assignment.

Anyway, if you are interested in getting into computer security and need to build your skills up, but are unable to attend an on-the-ground course, you might be interested in this one. My company paid for it, so impressed were they by the content.

Check out www.sans.org. The training courses available are listed on the front page.

    Have fun!
