Hey everyone, I've been looking for Bachelor's Degrees for Computer Science online. Interestingly enough, they're very had to find; only a few people offer them, but most distance learning schools I've seen offer Masters Degrees in CS. I searched and found American Sentinel and Mountain State University. American Sentinel's program looks nice (I'm talking about the courses and such that you have to do), but I'm not sure I can trust it. There's something about it that just makes me suspicious. I searched the forums and found Mountain State University, which seems more trustworthy, but their CS degree doesn't look as good as American Sentinel's (in terms of having game programming courses, artificial intelligence and computer graphics electives). Before I continue, I should say I don't want a game programming degree, I want a computer science degree (to keep things general). Can anyone tell me if American Sentinel is trustworthy (and the credits from the degree can be transferred to a full time school like say..Amherst as an example, when you're done). If not, can you suggest some other good, online, BACHELOR'S degrees in Computer Science. (Not IT, but Computer Science). Thanks a lot in advance, Gavin.
Have you looked at geteducated.com? Here's the link to computer science programs. Regis University also offers a CS bachelor degree, likewise, Franklin University, University of Illinois at Springfield, TUI University, and so on. By the way, those programs are all Regionally Accredited for maximum utility. Goodluck!
Thanks, but I should add that I'm not an American citizen. I see lots of programmes with state/province restrictions.
They aren't restrictions, they just offer cheaper tuition if you are from the same state that the school is in.
Grantham University has a CS program. NA accred, no ABET stamp, but programming is programming. Things to look for: C, C++, C# coursework, with LOTS of labs Java, XML, SQL coursework Microprocessor Systems Engineering along with Assembler coding All else is fluff. Good Luck!
Excelsior has a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Its probably the easiest to get because you can use CLEP exams, DANTES exams, Excelsior exams or StraighterLine courses to fulfill all the general ed requirements: English Social Science and so on it also lets you fulfill the computer requirements by taking courses, by taking exams or through certification (MS certs, Oracle certs, A+ certs and so on) You can take as many courses as you like at as many different schools as you'd like and transfer them all to Excelsior. There is no limit on the number of courses you can transfer in. Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology A) - All of these are required Discrete Mathematics and one course from the following list Calculus 1 Statistics and Probabliity Quantitative Methods Finite Math Mathemtical Logic B) then one course in each of the following Computer Architecture / Assembly Language Object Oriented Programming Database Concepts Data Communications and Networking Operating Systems Overview of Computer Security Project Management C) A concentraion Requirement: Choose from the following list Information Security Network Management Object Oriented Software Development Video Game and Simulation Development General Option Requirements for each concentration 1) Information Security (minimum of 15 credits) Network Security Web Security Computer Forensics Information Assurance Management Integrated Technology Assessment 2) Network Management (minimum of 15 credits) Advanced Networking Network Operating Systems Wireless Technology Telecommunication Management Integrated Technology Assessment 3) Object-Oriented Software Development (minimum of 15 credits) Advanced Object-Oriented Programming I Advanced Object-Oriented Programming II Data Structures and Algorithms Software Systems Analysis and Design Integrated Technology Assessment 4) Video Game and Simulation Development (Courses to be taken through the Game Institute) (minimum of 15 credits) Advanced C++ Programming for Game Developers Graphics Programming with DirectX9 Advanced Graphics Programming with DirectX9 Graphics Programming with OpenGL Artificial Intelligence Integrated Technology Assessment 5) General Option Integrated Technology Assessment Approved IT Electives here are some New York State Schools that offer computer courses completely online. ? ? ? I don't understand what you mean by hands on experience. you log on to a computer, either the university's or your own. You build a database, you create tables, you run queries, you write scripts, you create web pages, you write programs, you configure firewalls, you configure web servers. What hands on experience are you missing ?
I beg to differ. For my CCNA / Telephony courses we did indeed set up virtual labs through CISCO's Networking Academy... you would be well served to research before posting erroneous information.
American Sentinel University has accreditation from DETC, a "national" accreditation agency. This is accepted as a legitimate form of accreditation in the US. However, it is not as prestigious or as widely accepted as "regional" accreditation. Most of the best-known US colleges and universities (including UMass-Amherst and Amherst College) have regional accreditation. Regionally accredited schools may not accept credits or degrees from DETC schools like American Sentinel. If you want to transfer credit to a regionally accredited school (particularly a highly ranked school, like UMass-Amherst or Amherst College), then no, American Sentinel may not work.
