Has anyone heard of any good online Associate degree schools? Some that are kind self paced?

I was told I might find more answers in this thread area. I have decided to go to WGU for my Bachelors but think it might be a good idea to get my associates first. I am looking at Health Information Technology but am open to anything. Thanks :)

With some planning you could go WGU and then when you get to 60 credits just apply them to any of the big three for your 2 year. You do not have to take classes with them to get your degree if the credits you have corresponds with their degree plan. There is some cost associated with this method and it doesn't completely answer your question, but I thought it could possibly be applicable.

I just looked into Clovis, they are cheap and offer 4 and 8 week courses. Just an idea.

So what your saying is that I could take 60 credits at WGU, then transfer to a different school and automatically get my associates? If I liked WGU could I then switch back?

Columbia Southern University has a self-paced, start anytime option if you do not use financial aid, otherwise they are 8-week fixed-term courses. CSU is very reasonably priced and WGU will accept their transfer credits. I hope this helps...

Do other RA colleges accept credits from WGU?
I note they offer Competency Units (CUs) rather than Semester or Quarter units.
Has anyone transferred units from WGU to another college?
    I'm just curious.

Since LilKatie24 is new here, she probably needs to know that the Big Three refer to:

Charter Oak State College - Finish Your Degree Online
    http://excelsior.edu
    Thomas Edison State College

These are three, accredited, legitimate, colleges that will accept almost 100% of your degree through transfer credit. Some of the degrees require a capstone of 3 credits, but the rest can all be transferred. Other than that, pay for application, pay for enrollment and pay for graduation... everything else can be transferred. If you want to save money, you can take proficiency examinations for credit. These should be pretty easy since most of them are basic, and you already have some knowledge about Computer Science/Information Systems and the like. At the very least, you can use them for whatever general education requirements you need. Some types of these exams are:

    CLEP
    DSST/DANTES
    ECE

If by self paced you mean fast, then Penn Foster. It has been taking me less than a month a semester. That’s a 2 year degree in four months minus the mail time and grade time. Its DETC but most of the classes are ACE approved. It will run you about four grand, but they have a payment plan.

DETC = Distance Education Training Counsel Distance Education and Training Council: The Global Leader in Distance Learning Accreditation
An educational accreditation agency that is recognized by both the Counsel of Higher Education of America and the United Stated Department of Education. Not to confuse you, but although they are a legitimate accreditor, the courses will be more difficult to transfer to a school with more traditional accreditation.

ACE = American Counsel on Education ACE | Home
They evaluate a large list of educational programs and exams to determine if the learning involved is at a college level. Most colleges will accept at least some credit that has been approved by ACE.

Thank you all so much, you've really pointed me into the right direction, now all I'm deciding is to either get just a General Associates Degree in Science, or the Associates in Health IT. I'll probably just go with the General degree since it would give me more credits that I need for my Bachelors in IT.

I think I've decided to just go to WGU and when I complete 60 credits apply them to an Associates degree from one of the "big three" schools then either stay at said school or transfer back to WGU that way I wont have to go through so much hassle. I like Thomas Edison, it says they accept up to 80 credits. So my 60 credits would apply to a Associates degree right?

It sounds like a good plan, but you will need to make sure that your credits from WGU will transfer to the big three, otherwise you will be stuck with WGU. (That may not be a bad thing, but it could limit your options.)

As Ian Anderson noted earlier in this thread, WGU uses "competency units" which may or may not be accepted by other schools as transfer credit.

WGU is a good school, you should have no probs with there credit. They run about 4 g's a semester though. Thats high, you can find much cheaper schools than that.

I do have one more question and please bare with me. I would love to make a lot of money with an IT degree (hey who wouldnt) but my main goal is owning my own computer related business, selling parts, building computers, and also having my own internet service. To do this I would probably need a small business loan of some sort. Basically what I'm asking is, is there a specific Associate's degree geared towards this type of thing? I know you can't get an Associates in Computer Repair lol (or at least I couldnt find one) but what would be a good specific area for me to get into?
