    Greetings Distance Learning Community,

Currently, I am employed as an IT Director at a local college. Managing a small staff, a substantial budget, and numerous projects has left me with the feeling that I would be happier teaching; only, teaching what?

Therein lies the question: I hold a Master of Arts degree in Management and a BS in CompSci. If memory serves, I have 36 hours of graduate semester hours in management, so I am easily qualified to teach straight-up management. (I already have a couple of semesters under my belt at the community college level teaching introductory MIS).

Knowing that I could also teach some additional MIS with a little additional coursework leads me to think that maybe I could take this path:

Teach Business Mgmt Full-Time-> Get more education, preferably at doctoral level -> Enter job teaching either business or MIS.

For those of you that have made the career jump, what suggestions do you have? My first thought is to teach and maybe work toward a doctoral program in MIS or some form of technology so that I could teach either/or.

Are there any good online schools that offer RA programs in one of these areas? And, are RA online doctoral programs accepted in academia yet? I don't want to stray too far off the tried and true path, but frankly I don't have a lot of options where I live.

    I'd appreciate any sage advice.

    Sincerely,
    Infinity1911

    Hi,

If your goal is to teach undergrad online courses, you could quality with an advanced certificate from NCU that can give you the 18 credits required to teach MIS or any other field. If you want to teach graduate level courses, a PhD in MIS is the way to go. Some online PhDs in MIS that are worth considering are NCU, Touro, Nova, Capella, Argosy, Walden among others. If your goal is to teach full time, I would look for Nova, Argosy or Walden as they have many graduates teaching full time. If you want to teach as an adjunct, NCU is the most cost effective for a PhD but perhaps not the best option for a tenure track position.

You could consider the international route for your PhD. The UK, Australia and Canada have very good options for external study at the PhD level from top tier Universities.
