    Hi all!

Does anyone know anything about the PhD in IT program at Capella? I am graduating with an MSITM from TUI this term and have signed up with Capella (Information Security Specialty) to start in October. Is this a good choice or should I consider something else? Thanks for the input.:D

Well, what do you want from the degree? That will help determine if it is a good choice.

If you would be looking for a position as an IT manager in industry or academia, for a community college teaching position or for an adjunct teaching position (and you had good work experince), then Capella would be a solid choice. If you were looking for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at a university, then Capella would not be your best choice.

Thanks for your feedback. I hope to get into government IT work when I retire from the USAF. Additionally, I would like to be an IT consultant and an online instructor. I am not in it for loads of money; I just want to be able to live comfortably and add to the body of knowledge through ongoing research/education (a philanthropic approach). Are there any other online IT PhD programs out there for me, or should I just stay with Capella? Cheers!

Given your stated goals for earning a doctorate degree in information security either Capella University (Ph.D. Information Security) or Northcentral University (Ph.D. / DBA Computer Information Security) would be suitable. As a military member or veteran you qualify for a tuition discount at Capella University and Northcentral University.

Do you have a link to these discount programs for Capella and NCU? I was thinking that just because one is a veteran that there may, or may not, be a discount offered. I think it depends on whether one had any veteran's benefits left. I could not find anything specifically on veteran discounts from NCU's catalog, though.

You will find financial information for military attending NCU and financial information for military attending Capella University.

I don't have any direct experience with Capella.
A coworker in their PhD.D program was extremely dissatisfied, e specially with communication with his professors.

He ended up accumulating 80K in bills and couldn't get his dissertation or a project approved. He had the same reviewed by other professors he knew
and got good reviews with some reworking but not a complete silence , not a rejection but not an approval , actually he had to get an attorney and deal with Capella's.
He got some money back and was able to transfer to another university, I think NCU if my memory served me well.

Based on his calls in my presence and all the frustration he had with them, he shared or aired during our lunch brakes I would think twice and check many more references before enrolling with their PhD programs.
The enrolment is easier than with other traditional schools because they would like you to pay for the classes about graduating successfully appears to be hard and very high standard for PH.D is set by some professors.
    Can be a good thing.

I liked the outline of the program but when I heard that I was required to pay full tuition fees regardless of the number of courses you take, I thought it was not a good idea because you never know when you won't have time to take course but you are stuck with the bill. Capella can be good if you are planning to take some time off to finish the program but not a good idea if you have heavy commitments at work. In addition, it is a program that graduates in the order of hundreds each year and with little presence of graduates in the full time teaching job market. I would go for a program that graduates only few a year, Nova has a wonderful program in IS and so does Argosy. NCU might be a better option only because you pay as you go.
