Master of Health Informatucs / Information management

Dear all,

I'm interested in doing a Master of Science in Health Information System / Management and it seems to be a rare post graduate qualifcation to study online.

Any recommendations?

Devry has this program.

 

OHSU offers a 24 credit graduate certificate in Biomedical Informatics online.

They offer a 5% discount to HIMSS and AHIMA members. If you are interested in healthcare informatics, you should join AHIMA or HIMSS (or both).

Dakota State University offers an MSIS with a specialization in healthcare information systems.

And, they offer a DSc in IS with a healthcare information systems specialization in case you wanted to go on.

 

Northwestern University, Master of Science in Medical Informatics. If you must ask how much this program costs, then you probably cannot afford it. Seriously, courses in the program cost around $3,000 each.

Northeastern University, Master of Professional Studies in Informatics with Heathcare Informatics specialization. Approximately $2,000 per course.

University of Illinois at Chicago, MS in Health Informatics. Roughly $30K total tuition.

University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences at Houston, Graduate Certificate in Health Information Sciences. Approx. $2,000 per course for out-of-state students.

University of California, Davis has an online graduate Health Informatics Certificate program "coming soon".

Louisiana Tech University, Masters of Health Information Management. Arguably, the least expensive online option in the USA.

A relatively inexpensive non-credit option with name recognition - University of Connecticut, Healthcare Information Technology online certificate program. $1,425 to $1,625, depending on payment plan.

 

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of South Africa offers an optional Specialization in Medical Informatics (Curriculum B), with a specialization chosen within that in either Information Systems or Computer Science. UNISA's correspondent IACI can help American and Canadian students with inquiries.

 

Stanford has a program as well.

For any nurse who might come across this thread, the famous Excelsior College offers a Nursing Informatics specialization in their M.S.N. program. If you don't have a B.S.N. yet, there's an RN-to-M.S.N. pathway that includes completion of the Excelsior B.S.N. and compresses the total schedule by counting nine graduate semester hours towards both degrees.

And yes, most of the programs offered by the US universities are very expensive.

Allow me share my recent (bad) experience (for the benefit of anyone who come across this thread)

I already have a Master of Science in Computing from the UK, in addition, I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Informatics and several other Post Graduate qualifications in IT Security, Project Management, Networking, Database etc.

I was looking for a MSc in Information Management (with a generous transfer policy so I don't have to repeat similar modules) and I chanced upon the Master of Science in Health System Management from Amercian Sentinel Univeristy.

On close examination, I reckon I can knock off 6 modules using my myraid of post graduate qualifcations (excluding the Master of Science in Computing).

The outcome is a sloppy and shabby half baked attempt to evaluate my application, and I kept all the emails as proof.
I'll give a few examples to reflect their 'professionalism'.

1) I send a detailed email with queries, reasons why I am making these queries and what exactly I was looking for.
The reply I got was something like "ya, we can talk further when you are interested".
Pretty obvious that no one bothered reading my email. I replied nicely asking him to kindly answer my queries.

2) They then ask me to send the testamur and transcipts for evaluation. I send everything from my undergraduate to my post graduate (except my Master of Science in Computiny) and even took the effort to list down their modules and which I think can be transferred with justification (to speed up the process)

3) They came back and said why I did not include my Master of Science (as it is stated in my Resume), I had to point out again "why" and ask them to refer to the document I made. I also list the contents of my Master Degree and explained that the rest of my post graduated qualifications are sufficient (they only allow 18 credits to be transferred anyway)

4) They came back and ask for my undergraduate stuff, I replied asking them to refer to the attachments already send (days ago)

5) This is the amazing part.

I was told I cannot transfer credits as it was not on Master level (I know the education system is different but Post Graduate Diplomas ARE on Masters level) or thats its incomplete (whats the point of transfer credit then?)

In addition, they ask if my undergrad studies were done in 'a real university'. I did my Bachelor with Curtin University of Technology, Australia (I'm a Australia Resident). The university web wite clearly state that its accredition and if he had bother to google, Curtin University is ranked top 100 in the world for technology.

Fedup with the chap, I questioned his assessment and tell him he is being sloppy (he made many typos too and even sentances mistakes making it contradicting to read (e.g. "We can transfer because its not on master level" when he mean he can't)

I also told him that he lost a potentially famous student (ya, I'm pretty famous in the Healthcare Informatics industry in Asia, am already in Senior Managemnt covering Asia, I was also in papers for winning an international techie competition from microsoft).

Guess what was his reply? "thank you for your great comments"

In short, he didn't even bother defending himself when I pointed out bluntly that he is messing up my application. (its ok not to understand the education system from Australia, UK and Asia but not even being bothered.. thats not professional).

I cc' the email to their 'complaints department' and I'm going to see if they bother to get back to me. If they can do this to prospective students, I cannot imagine what they will do to students after they take their money.

Alright, enough of my ranting, I hope this post can help potential students in avoiding certain universities who can't be bothered.
