Does anyone have preferences or opinion on which of the two is better for someone in the US who already has MCSE certification? Charles Sturt may raise eyebrows for being in Australia and Aspen may raise eyebrows for being DETC rather than RA. Would they both take about the same amount of time to complete once you received the credit they grant for MCSE certification? I need 21 upper level units plus math requirement to complete a BS in Liberal Arts, Liberal Studies Option at Excelsior. Maybe I could complete those requirements for the BS in one year and then start Charles Sturt or Aspen in 2008. On the other hand, I could go directly to Aspen right away if I can get the 3 letters of recommendation. However, maybe even more eyebrows would be raised by lack of undergraduate degree.
I'd finish the Bachelor's, then go with one of the Charles Sturt programs: 1. Charles Sturt is well known internationally for distance learning, and it's RA equivalent. 2. Sure it's Australian, but not many will realize it, and of them not many will see that as a serious drawback. 3. If someone does raise an eyebrow, just say that you chose them because they have a really great joint program with Microsoft Corp., which is conveniently true. 4. You're halfway done with your Master's the day that you start. I wish I could have said that! Alternatively, you could ensure you never have any questions to answer by finishing your Bachelor's and then doing one of the online Master's programs through Brandeis University. It's only $18,000, so I think that's one instance where a name brand is worth it. -=Steve=-
Brandeis has raised their tuition to $19450. I'll look into that if I don't go with Charles Sturt and I'll also have see what kind of admission requirements Brandeis has. If I went with Brandeis, I'd have to spread that program over 3 years since it has more courses and doesn't transfer in the MCSE credits.
If cost is an issue, Aspen is still at $4200 which likely makes it the most affordable masters in the US. Of course, it's not Ivy League. But then again, neither is Charles Sturt nor Brandeis. If one wanted prestige, I think Harvard's ALM in IT would be the way to go. But that doesn't leverage the MCSE - and it's about the same cost as Brandeis (20k). Greg
You might (or might not) have seen Gregg DesElm's post on an IT career path involving Charles Sturt University's IT Masters program. In any case, best of luck and let us know how you're progressing.
He's still listed as a moderator here, isn't he? Chip/Bruce, does that mean you all know something about his current condition or does it mean that you don't? -=Steve=-
Charles Sturt is the best deal here, this will leave the door open to teach the University or community college level as Aspen has only DETC. Aspen is not even close to prestigious, but neither Charles Sturt. If prestige is an issue you can always take a post graduate in computer science at Stanford or Harvard to make your CV sound more credible.
Sorry for the long delay, I don't get over to this side that much. Gregg is still a moderator, and has been active behind the scenes recently. I believe he's just been too busy to take part in the current discussions.
