I'm not familiar with the tuition of public universities in California, but I would have thought that at least one university in California would offer an inexpensive Master's Degree in IT via distance learning for in-state residents.

Nationwide, Dakota State University seems to have the best price if one wants a Master of Science in Information Systems. According to their tuition page, the cost of tuition is the same for out-of-state residents and is $240.20 per credit.

    Gentlemen,

Thank you for the information; I looked up at those school before I asked for assistance.

Touro University International: First of all, all the classes are 4 credits plus written essay instead final exam. It is not my favorite, also the name sounds weird.

Dakota State University: This school has a great program; however, it requires GRE exam...which I don't have time to prepare for the the exam. Secondly, the program requires two courses at the campus.

State of California? I am not a residence of state of California; even though I am living here for over 3 1/2 years...it is just for duty. I am moving to Dallas next month.

    Anyway, thanks for the info!

Dakota State waives the GRE requirement if:

    1. Your undergrad GPA was 3.25, or
    2. You've completed 12 graduate credits with at least a B, or
    3. You have completed a grad degree in the last fifteen years

    http://www.departments.dsu.edu/gradoffice/MSIS/admission_requirements.htm

As for the on-campus lab components, this can be satisfied with only two intensive weekend sessions - your entire residency can be four days total.

I reviewed the CVs of the faculty. They all have extensive real-world experience and PhDs (several are Capella grads). The IA program is NSA certified, possibly making it the least expensive NSA-certified MSIA degree program in the country.

Between the low cost and the obvious effort at ensuring quality instruction, this little school in this small town (Madison, SD - an hour from Sioux Falls) is clearly making a big effort to make itself attractive.

Another good thing about the online master's program at the University of Hawaii is that you don't need to take all the undergrad prerequisites before taking master's level courses. (BTW, I now plan to apply to this program after finishing my B.S. in Computer Info Systems at Excelsior. The big draw is the low cost of tuition.)

    Daniel,

Thank you for the information...and it is a good research. However, the school requires enterance exam; which is GRE. It is regardless students earned their B.S at University of Hawaii or not... GRE is the biggest thing because I don't have time to take the exam. After finishing my degree next month, I'll start review Networking, Cisco, MCSE, and etc. Therefore, when it comes to August....I'll want to start working on my Master degree.

Anyway, it is a good research. Keep me posted if you find any other program. Most of the cheap program requires enterance exam...I don't know why..

Personally, I don't think the GRE is going to be a big deal, at least for this situation, because:

    1. The University of Hawaii doesn't have a minimum score requirement for the GRE scores.

    2. The computerized GRE can be convienently scheduled during most days of the year (depending on the test center).

    3. The computerized GRE results are reported quickly: "Score reports are mailed to you and up to 4 institutions approximately 10 to 15 days after you take the test." (ets.org)

    Daniel,

Does Columbus State University - Master of Science in Applied Computer Science requires GRE exam? Their tuition attract me, only $5,000.00 for the entire program.

Unfortunately, your theory about cheap tuition and GRE requirements applies to Columbus State University as well. The GRE is required unless one already has a master's degree:

"All applicants must submit...scores from the GRE test, unless the applicant has already earned a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution."

Hmmm... It requires only 900. Throw the monkey to take the GRE, maybe it can make it. Since I can take the GRE for FREE, the I think I am going to try it...DOD pays for it.

    Thanks for the info.

MS IT or MS MIS ?

Please forgive in advance if you are not interested in MS MIS. Embarrased to say that I really, really don't know the difference (not my cup of tea).
But the MS Management Informations Systems from The University of Illinois - Springfield, at $174 per hour LOOKS interesting (if it was my cup of tea). Quarter hour system.

Hope you enjoyed this suggestion, even if it isn't MS IT ( ok, I need to look that up... So I'll know for myself).

    Good luck

BTW, the GRE is required for UIS (University of Illinois at Springfield) and there is an additional $25 distance learning fee for each credit.

Isn't the GRE, MAT, GMAT, etc... required at almost every reputable university as one of the ways a university can validate the student ability to benefit from the program?

If not an admissions exam, then likely a respectable undergrad GPA or some already completed B grade grad classes will be required for admission. But, if you have a 3.5 undergrad or 12 hours of 3.0 grad -- you should do well on the GRE/MAT/GMAT... It's a catch22 situation.

    Just a thought..........

No, nor is a high GPA. Many do, but certainly not all. Heriot-Watt's MBA program famously doesn't require an ungraduate degree at all, much less something like a GMAT.
