I am interested in obtaining a B.S. in Computer Science through distance learning. Can all of the laboratory work for Computer Science courses be fulfilled through distance learning?

Most CS classes have moved away from having specific lab time, since basically everyone owns a PC, and compilers are readily available.

The one class at UIUC where we had to work on lab computers (they wanted everyone to have identical setups to make grading simpler, since we would be modifying the Linux OS kernel), they had a rather slick setup where we would use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection to remote into a Windows lab machine, and from there, we could connect to our own personal VMWare-hosted instance of Linux. It worked very well.

Awesome setup and use of technology for distance learning.

Thanks for all of your insightful posts Jeff. They really helped me in my pursuit of the BS CIS at Excelsior.

I can confirm this based on my own experience at two brick-and-mortar universities. In the early 1990s I took three computer science courses at the University of New Brunswick and was awarded 4 credit hours (3 hours lectures, 1 hour computer laboratory per week). In the mid-1990s I took several more computer science courses at Carleton University but was only awarded 3 credit hours for each course despite having to use my personal computer to complete the programming assignments.
