    Hello,
I am very close to finishing my BS at excelsior, I need some advice.
I would like to do an MBA with a specialization in MIS or computer sciences, I have no formal background in IT or computers.
I have been looking at NCU MBA's

I am really interested in learning more about databases.
My background is limited to the following:
    Intermediate advanced Excel
    Beginner Access
    Intermediate Frontpage
    Advanced Powerpoint/word/
    Some PC repair troubleshooting.
Do you have any advice on this or other programs or any thought on the whole Idea of getting an MBA with the specialization.
    Thank you much,
    Pilot

    Some thoughts

    Hello Pilot,

Congratulations on planning to get an MBA with specialization! There are many programs out there. Currently, I am enrolled in Ellis College of NYIT. I'm in my 7th MBA course with specialization in Management of Technology. They also have Management of Information Systems along with 12 other specials.

The program I am in is not AASCB accredited. It is a regional accreditation. However, I can tell you that the courses are high quality. Most of my courses were developed with the help of faculty members from top business schools (Columbia, Stanford, U. of Chicago, and others). Of the 7 I've taken, only 1 was not as satisfying meaning it was not well developed (taught straight from a text book w/o any interactive online content).

The adjunct faculty is excellent and very knowledgeable. And they don't make it easy either. They may give you some hints on certain topics but most of it is left for you to research and figure out. I have been studying really hard and spend 1-2 hours per day studying and 8-12 hours to complete an assignment.

There are no exams in this program. There are a series of projects that place you in the role of a business professional. It is up to you to solve the problem using the given tools. It is an excellent way to learn while mimicking the real-world.

I highly recommend this program under 2 conditions: 1) you have employer reimbursement because the program is expensive. 2) you are not concerned about AASCB accreditation.

Other people will tell you the only way to go is either cheapest, but quality programs, or only AASCB accredit. It all depends on what you want to do with it. For me, I am an IT Pro. I am taking this program to expand my knowledge in business and apply it to technology decisions. I am not looking to land a CEO position for a huge F500 company (although if it falls in my lap...). My employer is picking up part of the tab and I plan to stay with them for a while.

My other choice in terms of MBA with specialization is Capital College, in Laurel Maryland. It is a real college and well know in the area. They have an MBA w/ specialiation for under $20K. www.capitol-college.edu/index.php.

    Good luck!
