Troy is no longer offering these courses as of next term. Long story short I am not in the mood to change my degree program and so I need these classes.

So I'm looking for a Programming Methods Course (beginning C++) and then I might also need Adv C/C++ course.

Any help find somewhere that has these for offer online would greatly be appreciated.

I am curious. What courses does Troy U. want you to take instead of these courses?

    Hello Ollie,

I was very pleased with the courses in C and C++ at UMass Lowell. They are available online.

David: Thanks for the suggestion, their tuition is a little high but more importantly their schedule isn't going to work for me. But I do appreciate it. Any other suggestions anyone?

JoAnnP38: Thats just it. There isn't a substitution available. They are restructuring their entire BSCS program. Those of us who do not have these classes will be forced into the new program. I'm just not in a position to add more credit hrs to my plan.

I'm not happy about it at all. There was no warning, and to add insult to injury I had planned to take the Prog Methods class this term but they canceled it. The remaining courses left in the old program are being phased out over the next few terms. Of course I can't take most of them without these classes. So I'm in a bit of a hurry :(

They have revamped the CS major (it's an APPLIED compsci program now). It's listed in their "arts and sciences" catalog.

I can't seem to find the course descriptions

CS 2244 (3) Computer Programming I <-- this replaced programming methods I think.
CS 2260 (3) Computer Programming II
    CS 2265 (3) Advanced Programming I <-- Advanced C++
CS 3330 (3) Data Structures and Algorithms <-- Information Processing
CS 4420 (3) Introduction to Database Management
Systems <-- I am guessing it's the same as the other database course
CS 4443 (3) Web-Based Software Development <-- They added this
CS 4445 (3) Data Communications and Networking <-- Looks like they compiled two courses here (datacomm and networking)
CS 4447 (3) Systems Analysis and Design <-- hopefully this one is more technical rather than the business one
CS 4448 (3) Operating Systems <-- probably the same as control systems course
    Select three of the following:
CS 2262 (3) Business Systems Programming
    CS 3332 (3) Software Engineering I
CS 3347 (3) Advanced Programming II
    CS 4449 (3) Applied Networking
    CS 4451 (3) Computer Security
CS 4495 (3) Special Topics in Computer Science

One thing I don't like about this program is that they don't let you use the "military science" minor.

You also have to take a discrete math and business calc now. I have taken all the old cs courses and now am just finishing up my lower level classes.
    Best Regards,
    Bill

Wish I would have went that route instead of focusing on lower level first. I still can't get my head around the fact that there was no warning. Here's a snippet from an email from my advisor:

NEW PROGRAM: The Computer Science program will be changing as of 05/T1. If you have already completed IS 2244, you have the option with continuing in the existing Computer Science program or switching to the new Applied Computer Science major. If you plan to remain in the old program, make sure you take CS 3358 during 05/T1. It may be the last term it is offered. There is no Military Science minor available with the new program. You may view the new program in our online catalog at http://www.troy.edu/catalogs/0506undergrad/index.html. You will find the Applied Computer Science program under Arts and Sciences and also note the changes to the general education requirements. Please let me know if you would like to change to the new program. We will continue to offer the old courses for a short period of time under their old course number. To complete the old program, it is suggested that you take your courses in the following order:

    05/T1
    CS 3358
    CS Elective

    05/T2
    CS 3345
    CS Elective

    06/T3
    CS 3346
    CS Elective

    06/T4
    CS 4445
    CS 4440

    06/T5
    CS 2248
    IS 4447

    06/T1
    CS 4448

After this time period, the old courses will no longer be offered.

As far as 'substitute credit' under the new program, the advisor stated that my only option since I did not have IS2244 was to get credit from somewhere else. And I can't see a way to get it before 05/T1, so I'm gonna need CS3358 as well. I did not ask her about the other courses that are being phased out, my take is they are not substitutable either. If I can get these two classes before 05/T2 then hopefully I can finish out with Troy unless they kill some more of the old courses.

I am not sure if Troy takes Penn Foster or ACE reviewed classes but PF offers some C++ classes that might work for you, I suggest you to take a look and good luck!

If you want an RA option, Columbia College has these programming courses.

The original post is from over 5 years ago, they've probably found something by now.
