Noob to the forum but so glad I stumbled upon this jewel of info.

I've read quite a few post on BS in CS degrees, but not one that directly answers my question. I've also read the BAin4weeks site.

Most of the questions I've read have been from people who already have a 2 year degree or at least some credit. I've worked in the IT field for about 5-6 years as help desk to network admin to web master. I'm looking for (of course) a school that I can do %100 on-line, test out of the easy gen ed classes, complete in the shortest amount of time, cheap, and get the most out of the classes that I do take.

So far Fort Hays seems to be my best choice for these reasons:
    1. They accept CLEP, DANTES, etc, testing for gen ed
    2. %100 on-line option
    3. <$130 /hr
    4. Fed. financial aid

My concerns with FHSU is that you get the BGS INT degree.

Excelsior seems like it would be good too but doesn't offer Fed Finacial Aid and is more expensive.

    A couple questions:

    1. Is the BGS degree looked down upon as opposed to a BSCS?
    2. I don't have any trouble studing on my own, and I'm a good test taker. Is there a better way to pursue a degree? (ex. excelsior and testing out of most of it)
    3. Thoughts on other schools that might be a better fit.

    Thanks for any help.

Maybe I read something different then you. But my understanding is that fort hays gives you a BS in INT. Not a BGS

Well - I spoke to 'Mandy' in the INT Department. She was quite helpfull - to do the entire BS requires 124 Credits.

The cost ( I realize this is for Summer but that's alright for right now ) per credit is $122! So you're talking ~15K + books. Not a bad deal afaic!

I don't know of any other school that compares pricewise ( I looked at Excelsior, Capitol, AIU and a few others - none came close to FHSU prices)...

I am in the process of enrolling on another tab :)

If you are interested in staying in your current profession, then are you sure that CS is the right degree? I've been in IT for about 15 years and the work I do as a developer was better served by an IT degree. Just food for thought.

What's the difference between a CS and IT degree? I figured they were the same just from different places.

CS tends to be more math and science based (the folks who create new technology), whereas IT is more application and tools based, as well as usually includes some level of business component (the folks who implement existing technolgy). I know this is a 50,000 foot view, but it's reasonably accurate.

Congrats on the move to enroll!

I am taking 4 courses this summer ( 12 credits - in 8 weeks ) - starting on June 7th and finishing at the end of July - I am quite looking forward to getting started :)

If you're interested, I'll let you know how things go :)

You'll learn completely new sets of tools at least about five times during your career, but math will stay with you forever. So I beleive CS degree is a better foundation for a career.

I would agree it doesn't matter that much anymore.
