    I have seen a lot of distance Doctorates in CS and EE. But are there any that are for IT specific subjects such as Information systems, Information Technology, Networking, Information Security, Networking security or forensics. etc.

    when i searched the main site of degree info all doctorates were CS and ee

    Thanks

    That degree looks good, but it is a management degree, and was wondering if there are any IT, IS, Network or Information Security, etc, doctorates, not related to management.

    Nova Southeastern University offsers PhD's in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science and Information Systems by distance learning with only brief on-campus meetings.

    Colorado Technical University offers a Doctorate in Computer Science that like Nova is mostly distance learning.

    Both Columbia University and the University of Florida offer graduate degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering beyond the masters degree but short of doctorates.

    It looks like Colorado Technical University DM / PhD program is out of their Colorado Spring office, anyone know the tuition for their courses?

    This must be somewhat new ...

    The traditional location for all things IT/IS related in CS. Specialized degrees, like CIS, Software Engineering, or Computer Security are fairly recent inventions.

    I suspec there is great demand for specialized degrees at the masters level, since masters degrees are largely a practitioners degree. At the PhD level, on the other hand, everything is inherently specialized, regardless of what the actual degree says. There are plenty of people getting PhDs in CS that are doing computer security or networking work. In the academic world (the target for most PhD students), people know what your specialty is, so having a degree that says "PhD in Computer Security" is largely unnecessary.

    For what it's worth, Nova Southeastern does have some non-CS IS/IT type doctorates.

    I would challenge the notion that there are "a lot" of distance learning PhD programs in Computer Science. To the best of my knowledge, in the United States there is only one -- Nova Southeastern University. Colorado Technical University offers a DCS degree and Pace offers a DPS in Computing, but NSU is the only school I know that advertises a PhD in CS. I don't list NCU here because their PhD in B.A. with the Computer Science option does not rise to the level of these other schools. I consider it mostly an avenue for those with an MBA who want an option to study some topics in information technology. But IMO it is somewhat of a con job to call this option "Computer Science."

    Outside the U.S. there may be more options but I get so frustrated trying to find what I'm looking for on their web sites I have given up looking at them.

    Ok, looks like Captol College Will have a Doctorate or PHD in Network Security in a little less than 2 years. Perfect for my current school schedule!

    firstmode4c,
    How did you get that information?

    When I asked, they said it was very possible, but still up in the air.

    I got that From the Capitol College Thread!!

    Hi Marcus -

    Although CC is definitely interested in pursuing the development of a PhD or doctoral program, at this juncture, it's in a holding pattern. Once we hire a new CAO (Chief Academic Officer), I suspect we'll be able to move forward. At this juncture, no efforts are currently underway. Simply put, we just don't have the resources on hand presently to effectively move forward.
    When we do though, rest assured we will begin the process. The process is rather lengthy, so I suspect we're at least 16 months away from possible program inception (if not further).

    Best regards,

    Ken Crockett

    Just received word back from Ken. A couple of interesting things;

    1. there is an honors distinction, but for 4.0 students only. something to work toward!

    2. the phd program is, most likely, two years away.

    Kennedy-Western by all accounts is a degree mill and shouldn't be in anyone's consideration.

    All of the other doctoral programs you listed (except for NSU) are business oriented doctorates. This is not a bad thing; however, neither should they be advertised as Computer Science.

    What she said!

    KW"U"/KWE will give you a PhD in Computer Science (or General Engineering) for taking only four (sometimes 6, very, very rarely 8) of the courses listed above by firstmode4c - and completing only one, final paper!

    If this is NOT a laughable, mill-like practice, what is?

    Thanks.

    It appears that some guys here couldn't distinguish between degree mills and legitimate schools just as they couldn't distinguish between Computer Science and (Business) Information Systems. It's pitiable but I digress... Yes… Kennedy-Western is a degree mill and Nova is the only school (that I know) that currently offers short-residency (or DL blend) PhD in Computers Science in the US. All other schools including Drexel, UMUC, Colorado, Touro, NCU, etc. have doctorates in (Business) Information Systems. Pace has a doctorate program in Computer Science but it's called DPS. Other doctorates in computer-related fields are mostly in computer/electrical engineering.

    JoAnn,
    What is your next step after your MS?

    Have you ever wondered what life would be like without school? The free time? The scary thing, I have grown to really enjoy school to the point it's almost a hobby. With the exception of a 6 month break (restored an old vette) I have been at IU / UoP / Capitol for 9 years straight (next April)!

    I have been weighing out the options for my "next" endeavor.

    * Nova or Capitol PhD.

    * Another MS (Health Informatics)

    * Take the time / money and start another small business
