I have a quick question that I am sure you brilliant windows people can explain to me. I had a quick question that i have to answer for my windows 2000 class. The question is true or false:

Windows 2000 Server can be installed by the RIS: T / F

Now, i know windows 2000 PRO can be installed by RIS as found in the following Microsoft paragraph:

RIS provides network administrators with the capability to easily install the base operating system onto a new PC or to replace a system that has failed. RIS allows the administrator to do these things without ever having to visit the individual machine.
RIS enables remote installation of Windows 2000 Professional through server-side image management capabilities. No hardware-specific images for clients are required: Plug and Play is used to detect client hardware during Windows 2000 Professional Setup. The operating system and machine can be recovered in the event of a system failure; this provides the ability to boot and operate in a "disconnected" state and to support security after the operating system has booted.

NOW, I am thinking Server cannot be installed by RIS, but I cannot get a source anywhere that specifically says that, they all just say that you can install windows 2000 pro, but now windows NT server, win 98, etc.

Please help guys! I appreciate it so much!

    cool

Thank you so much. The other 2 articles do not say you can install windows server 2000 through RIS, But that article about windows 2003 says RIS can install Server OS, so that means 2000 can do it too. thanks!

Actually it does say it in on the page, look on this specific MS KB article

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298750

    Installing RIS
    1. On Windows 2000 Server, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remote Programs.
    3. Double-click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    4. Scroll down and click Remote Installation Services, and then click Next.
    5. Insert the Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK. The necessary files are copied to the server.

NOTE: After you insert the CD-ROM, a dialog box is displayed that prompts you to upgrade the operating system. Click No, and then close this screen.
    6. Click Finish to end the wizard.
    7. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
    8. When the server has restarted, log on to the computer as a local administrator.

Your question was: Windows 2000 Server can be installed by the RIS: T / F

So I assume you want to know if W2k Server can be installed with RIS, not if RIS can be installed on W2k Server.

At first Windows 2000 RIS Server did not support the Server OS.
Windows 2003 and Server 2000 SP3 and newer support the installation of Windows 2000 Server.

Ok maybe I read the question backwards, but I research it some more and it is still True to the question he asked earlier

This was a article that talks about when RIS started to support WK2000 Server when Service pack 3 was released

    Thanks!

Thanks for all the help guys.

    Here is my question re-phrased:

Using RIS on the Windows 2000 Server Platform, that would be a windows 2000 server Box running an RIS service, could you install Windows 2000 Server onto another computer from that box.

    Thanks!

It appears that windows 2000 Server cannot do that, but Windows 2003 server can. Is that right?

Provided Service Pack 3 (SP3) is installed on the Win2K Server this can be done.
SP3 added support to RIS WinXP and Win 2000 Server.
