Charter Oak's Information Systems Studies concentration

Charter Oak's "Information Systems Studies" concentration has a requirement for a course in software engineering or "computer organization". I'm considering how to fill this, and once I have that figured out I think I'm done planning.

Would Charter Oak likely accept a course in building applications with Microsoft Access as fulfilling a requirement for software engineering?

Does anyone have experience with COSC's definition of "computer organization"?

Also, the list of standardized exams shows that they accept the DANTES Management Information Systems exam as Upper level credit. Good news for me! The question, then, is which requirement/s in the concentration does it apply?

    Steve,

let me know how the IS concentration goes for you. I have credits laying around that I thought might work for a second Bachelors but I was curious how one satisfies the proof of team project experience issues with this concentration.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

    Good luck...

I would verify that this is the case with your advisor. The PDF version of the exam list shows the MIS exam as lower level credit.

FWIW, I have run across discrepancies in the past between the web and printed versions of COSC's standardized exam lists. The error is usually not in your favor, although they did recently up the credits for the CLEP College Math exam from 3 to 6.

    Cheers,
    Mark

You're right, especially for the DANTES tests. There are discrepancies for the following DANTES tests:
    • Human Resource Management: Web says Intermediate, PDF says Upper level
    • Organizational Behavior: Web says Intermediate, PDF says Upper level
    • Technical Writing: Web says Intermediate, PDF says Upper level
    • Management Information Systems: Web says Basic, PDF says Upper level
I wish they'd comb through both and make them match!

The error is usually not in your favor, although they did recently up the credits for the CLEP College Math exam from 3 to 6.

Well, we'll see, then. I've sent my application and request for official evaluation, and arranged for my six transcripts (yeah, I've moved around a bit) to be sent. Hopefully I'll have my official evaluation soon and can turn my spreadsheet from a hopeful projection into a true plan. I'm light on Upper level credit possibilities for my concentration, so I hope at least one or two of those is favorable.

I hadn't even thought about the team project experience requirement. If I portfolio out of a requirement, I expect it can cover that, as I have experience with IT project management.

    I'll let you know. :)

    Don't get me wrong!

After reading everything I've written, I realized I potentially may be taken as not thinking the world of Charter Oak so far. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I am enormously pleased with them so far, especially admissions counselor Bob Frederick, who has been impressively patient, informative, and punctual.

    Now you know...

Bob wrote me to explain that the web site has been updated since COSC's re-evaluation of creditworthiness of exams, while the PDF has not. In other words, when the web page and PDF disagree, the web page prevails.

Unfortunately, as DulciMark indicated, this seems to mean that all the lower values apply. :(

But knowing is half the battle, right?

    Re: Don't get me wrong!

I'll second that. Everyone I've dealt with at Charter Oak has been responsive and helpful. The aforementioned credit discrepancies were easily cleared up with an email inquiry. And, when I took the College Math exam, it was only good for 3 credits. When I found they'd upped it to six, I wrote my advisor, and I had the additional credits on my transcript within two days.

    Question for Steve

Hi, Steve, I too will be getting my Bachelor's in Information Systems, the question is, where do I go from there? The jobs I've held in the past have all been desktop support-related, with very little else (minor project management and network administration). I'm trying to ascertain what this degree would put me in line for job-wise as I'm currently unemployed, which gave me the time to really think about what I wanted to do (which was go back to school and finish my degree and search for a job as well). What is your background as far as employment goes, if you don't mind me asking? I am far from getting into the concentration portion of this degree (have lots of Cleps/Dantes to complete), and would like some real-world input. Thanks!

And Charter Oak is the right price for the unemployed. I know -- price is one thing that drew me to them in the first place.

For me, I see a Bachelor's as something I need to get out of the way so I can go after a Master's in something I actually want. An IS one is simply the fastest for me.

I guess the first question is what do you want to do?

It's a little out of date, but http://www.hiresteve.com has most of my work experience. I've done everything from call center tech support to running operations for an offshore gold brokerage in the Caribbean.

Having become interested in academia, I'm now a student retention coordinator for Keiser College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I'm thinking that after I wrap up the Bachelor's I should get a Master's focusing on distance learning. I think that online campuses are one area for IT workers that's still healthy.

    ITChick, Steve,

    please check out this website:

    www.usajobs.opm.gov

you are looking for the 2210 series and/or the various student/intern positions available.

    http://www.studentjobs.gov/e-scholar.asp

If you need help with the website please PM and I'll walk you through it.

Additionally, under the new rules, a new hire in the federal government can potentially get up to $40,000 worth of student loans repaid. This amount may increase to $60,000.

Government service is not always the best place to be but can provide invaluable training and experience.
    And its a job.

    Good luck,
