does anyone know how many CLEP/DANTES credits Troy State allows to be transferred into their BSCS program ? also how many total credits can one transfer to their program. I mean what is their residency credit requirements ?

Beside this anyone planning to or is enrolled in Fort Hays State University BS program ? BS INT in particular ? any comments (good or bad) about this university and the program ?

BTW, I contacted Troy State in the beginning of this month for this information and still havent heard back from them. Is this normal response time there ? wonder what is their student's experience

This is what the "Other Undergraduate Credits" Page, http://www.tsufl.edu/admissions/u_grad/OtherCredits.htm says:

"Maximum Credit Awarded for Non-Traditional Credit: The maximum number of credit hours that may be awarded for validated experiential or other non-traditional learning is 50% of the degree program."

    Non-traditional includes CLEP,DSST, ACE, etc.

I have around 36 credits from ACE and CLEP. So, technically, I could CLEP/DSST 24 more credits. I don't remember where I saw the residency requirements; however, I seem to recall it is atleast 30 credits.

This is my 4th term in this program. No MAJOR complaints yet. Some instructors are definately better than others (I see this no matter what school I goto). They also haven't offered a specific course (Computer Networking) in 2 terms, and I really wanted to take it this upcoming term (I want to finish the compsci portion of my coursework by next term). They still offer Data Communications; however, this class teaches the concepts and theories behind networking (taking this class now). I could really use an applied course in computer networking, rather than taking another programming course. They use blackboard for all their classes which is pretty good.

As far as the turn around for information, perhaps you should try calling. Average response time for my questions is around 2 two days.

    Hope this helps, etech.

    ETECH,

give them a call. My experience has been e-mail return in less than 24 hours.

    Bill,

Troy State has multiple campuses with DL programs (and they are separate, go figure). You may be able to pick the course up you need at one of the others and transfer it in to your campus. Just a thought. I believe Troy State-Dothan has computer offerings.

    Bill,

overall how is the support from teachers and the school? are the courses cohort based and are there a lot of assignmnets and tests or just one exam at the end. If taken 2 courses a semester (3 months right ?) how would this load be with full time work.

is there any other fees beside per credit of $140 at TSU, like technology fees etc ? are the books included in the fees, if not how much do they cost. I am already taking CLEP exams and I will check if I can map those exams to the Gen. Education requirements at TSU in case Excelsior does not work out for me. Is there anyone in particular I should talk to ? I tried their general number already, could not get through.

"overall how is the support from teachers and the school?"

Overall it is good (like I said; however, there are some teachers that are a little less responsive than others.

"are the courses cohort based and are there a lot of assignmnets and tests or just one exam at the end"

I am not sure what you mean by cohort based courses (they are the same as any 3 semester hour course which is 10 weeks long). I have not taken one that only had one exam. Usually it is a midterm, paper, and final. Some have a test every week. Some use proctored exams, some use blackboard timed exams. The proctored exams seem more straight forward than the time blackboard ones (the timed one always have tricky questions that you have to be careful in). Some don't require as much as other courses (a lot of the programming classes are taught by the same instructor and he gives A LOT of work).

"If taken 2 courses a semester (3 months right ?) how would this load be with full time work."

A 2 course load is fine. 3 courses are a little to much for me (I am taking 3 right now). If I don't do too well this term (which I am so far) I will go back to 2. Courses are 10 weeks.

"is there any other fees beside per credit of $140 at TSU, like technology fees etc ? are the books included in the fees, if not how much do they cost."

I don't think so.. 2 courses cost me 840 (so it doesn't appear they charge a tech fee).. No books are not included. Books cost, on average 60 bucks. Don't buy them at TSU bookstore unless you have to (goto Amazon, bookfinder, etc.). You can save a lot of money buying on the Internet.

"I will check if I can map those exams to the Gen. Education requirements at TSU"

    Bill,

There are minors available in BSCS program at Troy State. Does that mean that if I choose that route my degree would not have a major in Computer Science ? would it still be BSCS ? which one did you take ? The reason I like the minor option is that they allow 18 credit hours free electives. not sure which one is good though.

Yep, still a BSCS (Major coursework is the same no matter what minor you pick).

If you are former military, I suggest the "military science" minor. This plugs in all of your military credit (if you have over 18 credits worth) into the MS minor and electives (I satisfied the minor and elective credit).

If you are not former military, then what ever floats your boat.

    Best Regards,
    Bill

yikes.. they have a requirement for COBOL. Its so antique. They should have had Java or something. What would anyone do with COBOL...

Correct, they require Cobol. A lot of people use Cobol (apparently older systems, mainframes, etc.). I am taking the course this term (hate it). Spacing is really strict on it (one space wrong on your format and your output's a mess).

Bill, just wondering how much are the books costing you even buying it from Amazon or other source and did you have to buy more than one book for a course ?. I want to ensure that is calculated in the total cost.

hmm average price is probably 50 dollars per book (one cost as much as 72 dollars another cost me 30). Don't ever buy new (my opinion). Be sure that you buy a book with cdrom if there is one included (for example, the programming methods class requires a c++ compiler which comes with the book). I still have a lot of the books you need. If you decide to go with Troy State, let me know when you get to:

    Advanced C++
    Infomation Processing
    Database processing
    Cobol
    Visual Basic
English 102 (if you need it)
    Data Communication

These are the books I still have sitting around.

    Hope this helps,
    Bill

Thanks Bill. I will surely let you know if I get there. I am still waiting to hear on my credit evaluation from Excelsior. Once that is clear then I will decide on the course.

    etech,

Even if you do go with Excelsior, Troy State is pretty cheap and you may be able to use some of their CS courses for your CIS requirements (I am sure you can enroll in classes as a non-degree student).

I wasnt sure if I could take courses at Troy State without enrolling in their program? From their website it seemed I cannot do that. Correct me if I am wrong. If I can take courses with them without taking up the degree it will be so good. It will allow me to test run their courses and see how good I do.

If I take courses elsewhere I guess it will cost me same or more to complete some of the courses. I really wish Troy State would do an unofficial evaluation of my credits without enrolling in their program which would make the decision so easy for me. But they dont do that.

well if you are willing to pay the application fee, just do that and take courses until they tell you you can't (because you haven't turned in transcripts) ;)
