    Hi all,

I'm currently attending Strayer University (www.strayer.edu) for my Bachelor's degree in Database Technology. I've been thinking transferring to Regis University in Colorado (www.regis.edu) and completing my undergraduates degree there for a BS in Computer Science.

It's about $66 more per credit hour, and majority of my credits are transferrable (or so I've been told). My reasons are because of their BSCS program, and Regis U is more prestigious than Strayer (by US News and other sites). Downsides is that I've read their program was quite rigorous, meaning taking one course at a time would delay my graduation.

If you guys were in my shoes, which path would you take? Would Regis U be a better choice for the future? Or is Strayer's BS in Database Technology program decent?

    Thanks for any replies!

    Gains vs. Rigor

    Hi Remn,

you mentioned that Strayer is not as prominently known and prestigious as Regis, but I think that a Strayer Degree will be as accepted as Regis, or any other schools. Unless you go to Harvard, Penn State, Ga. Tech, Cal Poly, etc., etc., one degree from one school is comparable the another degree from another school.

I attended Regis...and "From My Personal Experience" if it were the only choice out there I wouldn't have a degree today! Either because they stretch enrollment out to over 2.5 years to keep your money coming in, or because I had to almost forego everything else in my life while I was attending Regis...and I still earned a "C" average for the credits that I took there!

Then, once you are enrolled, they have you at their mercy! I was told that I could enroll and take more credits once I complete my first semester...it turned out to be a crock and they became unresponsive once I made complaints.

Well, sorry to get onto a soapbox!

It really depends on what your reasons for dissatisfaction are. As pointed out Regis is traditional university that is likely to be quite rigerous. Strayer is more inline with AIU and U of P. I looked at Regis and found many positives, but decided against due to the limited general education. Strayer I dismissed almost immediately due to "technical college" like program. If I was to choose between the two it would definately be Regis. I am sorry that this is unlikely to be of much help to you.

Only hard work makes you successful

    Hello Remn,

I have read your post and I have a few thinbgs I want you to think about !

    1. If some graduates from a repitable 4 year school will that make them a success?
No , ofcoares not the only thing that will make you a success in this world is you
how hard apply yourself. Thinking outside the box staying motivated these are what
makes successful people going to a nationally ranked program helps but that is not going
    to make you successful

    2. If I graduate for regis will that guarentee faster and better employment? no, you will probably
start the same place as someone from the same school or a school that may not be ranked at all. Usually
you will have to start at a help desk position or some thing similiar if you have experience already it
    doesnt really matter!

    3. Will regis provided a better education? Maybe but I dont think that youwill suffer much but you program
at strayer is specilized so you wont have the flexiility fo a cis program. But You can excel in database
administration faster than someone with a cis degree because you recieve more train than they would in that program!

I would stay with strayer and try to recieve the best grades I can and load you resume up with alcalades such 3.5 or better gpa
deans list ,presidents list or what everawards you have tyr to complete a certification like oracle or mcdba soon after you finish
strayer. I think this would make a bigger impact on future employers than what school you graduated from.

also You can always get a masters from a ranked program if you complete all the previous tasks and
obtain a masters from for example drexel university that would be worth more than a bachelors anyday!

Good luck in your studies , Work hard and be successful!

    Agree with CK

I tend to agree with Code Killer!

I have a BA from Thomas Edison State College...which I never new existed until a few years ago, and I have been able to land some pretty good jobs and promotions with the degree! In fact, I know and have kept in touch with people that were taking Community College Classes along with me to support their requirements for TESC and some of them are netting over $95K per year with their TESC Degrees. My good friend is a Webpage Layout Architect for Panasonic and he earns a good income and he got his foot in the door with a degree from a school that many HR-Managers probably will have to research to verify it's validity!

I say that to re-iterate that you are comparing Strayer vs. Regis University...not Regis vs. Harvard (Princeton, Brown, Vasser, etc). I think that Strayer can provide you with the degree, save you some money, and you can still enjoy the quality of life that you are used to! With Regis, I am certain that you will have to devote nearly all of your "spare time" to your studies. In fact, I don't think that Regis is for working professionals! I really don't! Being rigorous is a great quality for a school to have, but I think that most of us want a balance. My job provides the stress and rigor...I don't need a school to do that!

    Continue with Strayer

I took about a year's worth of courses from Strayer, all at their brick & mortar campuses in Northern Virginia. If you're taking courses through Strayer Online, and you're learning something and you're on track to complete it, I say don't rock the boat.

If you're taking classes at an actual campus, and it's their Arlington campus, then switch to Loudon or Manassas. Trust me; they're great out there -- you'll never consider transferring from Strayer if you go to their Loudon campus.

As a D.C.-area native, my impression is that Strayer's regional reputation has become very positive in the last ten years, and that it's still on the rise. I don't think Regis's is really better. And like the people say, unless it's Brown or Columbia or something, no employer's going to care much anyway.

You should have set up a poll. :)

My undergrad is in C.S. from Regis (in residence, not DL) and it isn't an easy program. MIT or Cal Tech? No. However, it is challenging...you can work, complete the program, and do it with a decent GPA (3.7 here) but you won't have a ton of free time.

I entered Regis with approx. 64 credit (semester) hours, and completed about that many at the school...taking two classes per semester (without taking summers off) I finished in about 3 years. I wanted a program that would challenge me, and where I felt I would actually learn something from, and it definately accomplished both.

That said, if prestige is the primary reason for transferring I'm not sure I would. Even though Regis may be ranked higher, it's not so significant that the average HR person would really pay it much mind. As has been mentioned, with C.S. once you get past the MIT's, Cal Tech's, Ga. Tech's, & Stanfords of the world there isn't tons of difference reputation wise.
