Hello everyone. I'm in the process of shopping around for a distance CS PhD program, and I've been looking through this message board to get a feel of what is available. I have found a large amount of useful information about a number of distance learning PhD programs, which has really focused my search. But, a topic that I haven't seen addressed yet is what research topics each of the distance CS PhD programs are strong in. Undertaking a PhD is a serious commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly. It involves a large investment of time and effort, and I'd like to make sure that I'm considering schools that will be able to assist and mentor my chosen area of research interest: operating systems. Does anyone have any information on which distance learning CS PhD programs are strong in particular areas of research? Andrew
Hi Andrew: New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) are the only two schools that offer doctorate in Computer Science at a distance in the United States. I am sure that there are other schools in the U.K, Australia, and SA that also offer DL programs in CS. At NSU, you can conduct OS-related research for your dissertation. You may take a look at some of the dissertations that were written by NSU Ph.Ds in computer science and closely related fields at Nova GSCIS dissertation List If the link does not work, you may use the one below. http://www.scis.nova.edu/Doctoral/Director/dissertation/DissertationList.pdf Ike Okonkwo, Ph.D. (2003) (Dissertation tittle: "An investigation of the Skill Sets Needed by Information Systems Managers to ....")
Few programs offer a complete online PhD program. NJIT and Nova require some residencies, you can also try University of Idaho but with a required residency of one year. Australian programs also require some residencies. The closest thing to a pure online PhD in Computer Science program is the PhD in applied computer science from North Central. However, the program is more like a business with computer science degree.

Re: Re: Best PhD program for OS research? You are right. I forgot to mention that NJIT and Nova require some residencies. The program at Northcentral University (NCU) is actually a business degree. Ike Okonkwo, PhD (Nova Southeastern University)
