As part of my credit requirements for the BSBA degree at Thomas Edison State College (TESC), I have chosen (from the available list) an area of study in "Computer Information Systems". My ever-changing plan currently calls for the completion of these 18 credits via portfolio, on a variety of subjects ranging from UNIX, C programming, System Design, etc. However, many of these courses are technically classified by TESC as "computer science" courses, and not listed under the (sparse) "Computer Information
    Systems" category.

Of course, as you can imagine, there are many schools that categorize them all as CIS, or CS, or whatever. I am wondering if anyone knows whether or not TESC will allow me to use these so-called "computer science" courses as part of my area of study in "computer information systems"? Would love to hear from current or past BSBA candidates.

I am waiting for my TESC application to be approved, and am scheduled for my first round of CLEPs (yay!) next week. Hope to join the ranks of the enrolled soon ...

    Cheers.

    Unixman,

A lot of the CIS and CS course you will find are the same courses. I would always check with the advisor before you decided to enroll in a course but I would NOT take a course because is was CS350 operating systems fundamentals and not CIS350 operating system fundamentals. Just don't take an IT101 intro to computer applications when you need CIS/CS101 intro to computer science.

    Hope this helps,
    Bill

TESC also has a BA in Computer Science you could apply those courses to. Or, "to which you could apply those courses."

Thanks for the responses, all. Yes, TESC does offer several technology-related degrees, but the current positioning of my career dictates that I pursue a business degree. Given that, I am trying to make the most of my successful 15 year career in IT to knock out my chosen "area of study" for the BSBA degree (which is CIS). In doing so, I can then focus on the business side of the curriculum with my brain. :)

    Cheers.
