I asked this awhile back, but haven't started studying yet. So I thought I would ask again.

I'm looking for your expereince with study materials for the CLEP US History II.

    Thanks!

    go to the library..

There are, usually, some old history text books which have been donated. Or you can get them on inter-library loan. (in fact, I used to do this for my class textbooks during undergrad, late fees are cheap compared to book fees) Anyway, go through the chapters, take notes like you would in class and take the review questions at the end of the chapter as a test of what you learned. Taking notes seems to burn the material into your brain. CLEP is wonderful, I had 42 credit hours of them and it was great!! (12 in history as I am somewhat of a history buff) Try the above with other classes as well. The two I did it with were State and Local Government and Human Resource Management. Psych and Soc would be likely candidates as well.

Thanks, Chris. I am looking for replies from people who have used study material for this specific test. I would like to know specifically what was used and what score they got.

I just took the CLEP US History I (last week) and scored a 71 by reading Barron's EZ 101 American History to 1877 the day before the exam. They also make one for 1877-Present that I would buy if I were to take the CLEP US History II. The small book hit every subject I needed to know for the exam with clarity.

    Another thing...

if you are affiliated with the military (many on here are). I recommend highly that you take the DANTES exam instead of the CLEP. In the old days, anyway, DANTES did not take off for incorrect answers like CLEP did. However, it has been years since I took the test and I do not know if this is still the case or even if the DANTES tests still exist. If you do take the CLEP be aware that in the past no answer was worth zero points but an incorrect answer was a .25 point deduction. Makes guessing hazardous!

Thanks for your input cmt. I saw that series at the bookstore today and will consider it. I am a sucker for review questions, tho, and it didn't appear there were any in there. I have done well on tests when I have studied without review questions though.

Apparently, this has been done away with once the CBT's were introduced. you can guess your butt off and not lose one point (although you may not gain one point either :D )

If we could keep this thread on topic, I would appreciate it. I have a very specific question I am trying to get answered, not general experiences regarding taking tests. Feel free to start your own thread on that topic! Thanks!

Have you looked at the Barron's AP US History? I have used two Barron's AP books (Environmental Science and Human Geography) to prepare for DANTES (very similar to CLEP) exams. The Barron's AP books have review questions at the end of each chapter (some have full exams in the back of the book). That might be what you are looking for. I can vouch for the structure of the Barron's AP series, but I don't know how close the material will be to what is needed for the US History CLEP.

I will look again at the Barron's. I used the Barron's AP for American Govt CLEP. The US History covers the equivalent of US History I and II. There is also a Barron's book in between the EZ series and the AP series that has review questions.
