I will be taking the DANTES MIS test in the next week or two does anyone know of a good website that covers this material? I took the Factsheet test on DSST web site and did well. I have read where others have not used any study material and passed. I think I am ready but would like to find an online refresher.

    Thanks

I also intend to take this exam soon. Besides a good website that covers the material, is there a Cliffs Notes type book for MIS?

    DANTES MIS

I did a bit of research on this exam as I was thinking of taking it as part of my degree plan for Excelsior's BS-CIS.
From other students' comments this exam appears to be one of the easiest of the DANTES exams.
I'm not aware of any web sites but this book might be of help:

Title: Management Information System (Dante Series: No 77)
    Author: Jack Rudman
    ISBN: 0837366771

The only review of it I could find was at Amazon.Com and the reviewer states:

Great Q&A guide for passing this DANTES exam,
    October 7, 2000
    Reviewer: 12121212
Using this Q & A book and two of the reference books DANTES recommends, I passed this test and acquired 3 more upper level credits. My score scaled to an "A" (with Regents College). If you need to pass this DANTES test, get this book.

I used a title called "Essentials of Management Information Systems" by Kenneth C. Laudon. I found it on half.com, and only used the glossary to study(flashcards).

    I scored a 58, with only a weeks study.

Good luck on the test, though I don't think you'll need it.

I was hoping not to have to buy a book as I am short on time. What version was the book? 2000? 2002?

I also noticed that the recommended book on BA in 4 weeks is Management Information Systems None ("For Dummies" series)
I looked and the "For Dummies series" does not have a MIS book.
Somewhere here someone recommended MBA for Dummies but this book is very vague on the MIS subject?

    Thanks again

I scored a 73 (out of 80, I believe) after just one evening of study. I would have passed without any study, but the review probably raised my score by 10-15 points. I took the exam at a USAF base, and they were able to give me immediate feedback on my score (just the quartile), which was nice. I used the following textbook sites to review:

    Thanks for the great sites.

Does anyone know if civilians can take DSST and CLEP test at military sites? I am close to Fort Knox and could go there if they do? The testing sites at the local colleges only give test one day every two weeks.

The military sites don't show up as testing centers on Collegeboard.org????

Thanks again for all the great info.

I'm a civilian, and I had no problem scheduling and taking the MIS exam on base. This was over a year ago, and I don't know if the policies have changed since then. I saved about $40 though vs. taking the exam at a local university, since there weren't any additional test administration fees. I don't know if they would have allowed me to take CLEP exams. You're best bet is to contact the education office to ask about it. There's a number specifically for DANTES testing:

    Google is your friend. :)

I took the MIS exam a couple months ago, scored a 70. I searched the web and found an instructor's site with Powerpoint slides and notes. I also used a textbook site with slides. I didn't spend more than a few hours looking at these sites. I just deleted those links this week (of course), but I think the textbook links you were given will be great resources to scan through.

I've only taken one Dantes, and I did run into problems because I was a civilian. When I called I was told that I could take tests on base, although I did need to bring a money order for $35 (no cash, no checks). The first time I tried was a lunchtime appointment and I was bumped because there were too many people and I had the last priority, behind Military and their dependents. I did have an appointment, but Military walk-ins were allowed to go ahead of me. The administrator told me lunch hour test times were often full, so the next time I did one of the 9am times and got in without a problem, although I did have to wait and couldn't check in until there was nobody else in line and it was after 9 o'clock.

Interestingly, after I finished the test she referred to an email and made a phone call and determined that she wasn't supposed to administer tests to civilians. When I questioned her, she said the policy is determined locally at each base. Fortunately for me, she mentioned that contract employees are eligible, and I work for a defense contractor. So I'm okay, although I am concerned about others, hopefully this base's policy is not the norm.

Where did you take your exam, Karen? I took mine at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, and I didn't encounter any problems at all. I waited in line with everyone else, and when I got to the front I wasn't asked to wait for the uniformed military personnel behind me. The testing room wasn't full, but they didn't mention anything about the possibility of getting bumped by walk-ins. I guess that it's a good idea to confirm their policies ahead of time, to know what to expect.

One thing to make sure of is that you bring a money order for the correct amount, or else you'll be SOL. When I took the exam it was $36.

I took the test at Hurlburt Field in Northwest Florida. One of my coworkers is recently retired military and worked in a base Education Center when he was in the military. He said that his center did not allow civilians to test either. He also was surprised to hear that I didn't get a preliminary grade when I took the test, apparently his center had a scanner that gave an unofficial score. Did your base have that equipment?

Yes, they had a scanner. They couldn't give me an exact score, but were able to tell me that my score was in the top quartile. I already knew that I'd passed, but it was still nice to have the feedback right away. I would have thought that there would be standard policies for these things, I guess that each location does things differently.

    Big bummer!

I called Fort Knox and they will only give DANTES test to dependants of millitary personel. No civilians!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for all the help.

I Took the DSST MIS test at a local collage!

I think I did very well on it but have to wait 4 to 6 weeks!
Does it really take 4 to 6 weeks to get results back?
There was a lot of basic stuff about computers but I think I got stumped on a couple questions about database types.

Thanks for all the help and neat review sites.

With the Dantes exams I have taken, it has taken around 19 days to get the results.

Scored a 59 on the MIS test! I only used the sites that Gary Rients suggested.
    Thanks Gary:D :D :D

  18. For anyone taking the Dantes MIS exam, these links were VERY helpful. If you have solid IT knowledge and use only this material you should score well (I got a 75).

Is this exam still easy? Can the basic computer user with instacert pass this exam?
