ALEKS is no longer ACE approved

I'm re-posting this from the IC board. A student over there submitted his ALEKS math class, and it came back expired. Upon further investigation, ALEKS let their evaluations expire as of 9/30/2013. ALEKS has confirmed that they are no longer approved and are not confirming whether or not they will seek renewal. If you visit the ACE site, you will notice they are all listed as expired.

If you're mid-class, you should know that your ALEKS maths will not be for credit. If you finished before 9/30 you're fine.

This is certainly a bummer. In our family, we had already made the switch to Khan Academy (instead of a supplement, he's got it set up as a full curriculum- which rocks- and is free), which is a good alternative. Using Khan Academy allows you to then use CLEP/DSST exams for College Math, College Algebra, Trig/PreCal, Calculus, and Statistics.

I feel bad for students, but not the organization. Their statistics course is absolutely terrible, I encountered an extremely rude and condescending customer service rep and was completely ignored when I sent a complaint about the way I was treated.

I don't have more details than anyone else, but I presume that the ACE approval is extremely valuable to them and that they wouldn't just sit back and let it expire. I can't help but think that either something must have gone wrong during the renewal processes, or they are in the middle of big changes that they have yet to make public.

What about textbooks? Are you just using CLEP study guides?

I have never bought textbooks for any test. There are plenty of videos and study materials (like flashcards) online.

In our house? We use Khan Academy, which is a recorded lecture. Every few lectures there is an activity of practice problems. We have Saxon Math text books, but CLEP study guides would certainly be helpful. I'm not sure if my current high school son will use CLEP or just take math in college. My oldest used ALEKS completely for all his maths.

That's impressive. For any math class, I would think one would need a textbook to do practice problems in order to become proficient enough to pass the CLEP.

You can't learn to play piano just by watching videos. At least I can't. :)

I used ALEKS for Intermediate and College Algebra. For Intermediate Algebra, I refreshed with a video series by Annenberg Learner because I didn't like the ALEKS learning system. For College Algebra, I watched The Great Courses video series. With ALEKS, as long as you score at least 70% on an assessment, you can get credit through ACE. So, technically, I tested out of math instead of going through all of the ALEKS lessons. For math, I don't need practice; I just need to remember how to solve the problem.

After more than 9 MONTHS studying for the Statistics class, I finally passed today, and just put in for the ACE transcript. I don't see anywhere that it isn't accepted any more. If that's true, I want my $180 back. Except for this site, I don't see that posted anywhere. Can someone give me a link?

There was a period in October - December that ALEKS let their ACE certification lapse; however, it was renewed in late December; retroactive to October.

Thank you, Shawn. Just had my latest course deposited in ACE, so looks like they're okay. Scared me!
