    Hey everyone,

I am going back to school. I am looking at Excelsior right now but the advisors aren't to helpful.

What math can I take that is easier than college algebra that will go toward a liberal arts degree. One that is inexpensive and will actually count towards my degree.

As far as science goes, my friend took Nutrition 1322 and U of H (houston) accept it as a science but when i called excelsior the lady said no to nutrition as a science. it's listed as a biology so I really don't understand it.

    Any suggestions guys.

Also you may want to looks at ALEKS self paced math- aleks.com. Some of their math courses are ACE accredited, and many colleges will give you credit. Ask any college you are interested in whether they give credit for ALEKS-ACE. They do have College Algebra, College Math, and business math, statistics for the social sciences.

Only the school itself can make any guarantee. There are also different rules behind different requirements. For instance, a school might have a general education requirement that everyone have a math course of "College Algebra" or above. They might accept "Intermediate Algebra" as a mathematics course for credit toward the total amount of credit required for the degree, but not count Intermediate as fulfilling that mathematics requirement. ("Intermediate" is just below "College.")

You might want to ask Excelsior about, and consider, statistics. Statistics isn't necessarily easier than College Algebra, but it may be for some people; YMMV. The direct applications of statistics, as a tool, to business, social science, health science, etc., might aid motivation and understanding.

Do ALEKS. I did their ACE-accredited Beginners Algebra course. Some sources said online that Excelsior doesn't accept it, but they did and it got rid of my quantitative requirement. I never had to touch math again. :)

  8. ALEKS is a good choice. But not every school accepts it -- even those on the ACE list. Anyone have advice on how to go about getting a college to count it?

The College Algebra one can be done in a weekend. Just failed another assessment on the Statistics, and have to redo 6 sections that I had already passed. I wouldn't recommend it for something fast.

It's not cheap - it's $1300 with the book. However, Excelsior's Every Day Math course is very doable even by someone who hadn't taken math for 40 years :) I did it in 8 weeks, but I think it also comes in a 16 week class.
