Well, they were going back and forth about this for a while, but it looks like the day is finally here. I know a lot of people will be disappointed, but I don't see this policy change as a bad thing.

They also gave a good amount of of time in advance for people to adjust their plans accordingly.

Perhaps the GRE Subject exams are going away, too?

I meant for currently enrolled students, who have a year.

There is nothing at the ETS website to suggest that this is the case. ETS still offers eight different GRE subject exams, and they are still offered three times per academic year. ETS has already announced the three future test dates for the 2010-2011 test cycle, which will end with a test on April 9, 2011.

So GRE subject exams are definitely running through April 2011. And then I would assume that ETS will initiate the 2011-2012 test cycle in the fall of 2011. I don't see any indication otherwise.

Over a longer period of time, I think this might be true. There used to be 20 or so subject tests. Now they are down to 8. From what I've read lurking on forums where brick-&-mortar undergrads find advice about grad school the subject tests are only so important. They are consistently "ranked" no higher than fourth in importance, behind GPA, letters of recommendation and statement of purpose. Many also say they are less important than demonstrable, relevant extra-curriculars: internships, extra lab time, any working experience, etc. Since the point of the GRE has nothing to do with our little niche community and all about grad school, if the grad schools don't care a whole lot about them then nobody else will eventually I guess.
