    Hello,
I started researching yesterday regarding inexpensive ways of earning a Bachelor's degree. I got excited when I learned the affordable GRE subject exams could be applied for up to 30 units each at Excelsior . Then I learned that the option may not exist if I don't enroll before July 1. So, now I'm trying to gather as much information as possible ASAP.

I plan to take 2 subject exams (Psy & Bio) for hopefully 60 credits units and it would be great if I could get a letter grade. Also, I recently read that Charter only offers 18 units for Psychology and a max of 24 units for Biology. So, I don't want to go that route. I'd like to know:

If Excelsior offers a letter grade for GRE Subject Exams?
If not what other school does? (Charter, Empire State, TESC?)
Do either Empire & TESC offer up to 30 credits for each exam?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the journey. Excelsior awards "pass" credit. I think this is true of the others too.

Please note that Excelsior is currently considering termination of their program to accept GRE scores for credit. Students who want to ensure they are still allowed to present GRE for credit need to enroll before July 1st in order to be grandfathered into the old policy if a new one does come into effect.

How many credits does COSC award for the other subject exams if some are different? I am interested in Eng. Lit. myself.

I didn't get a letter grade, but I did get a cumulative GPA that I didn't understand. I forgot to ask them how they calculated it, but I'll ask them tonight. Nevertheless, all of my psych credits from the GRE are listed as "P" for Pass.

TESC doesn't award anything for subject GREs. You already know about COSC's 18/24 credit award. I believe Empire still does, but they don't like to put a lot of info about it. They want you to call and ask about it. For what it's worth, I believe you can also get enough credits to complete a major, much like Excelsior, but the sliding scale of credits is different. I seem to recall that you would need way above the 90th%ile to completely test out, 96% seems to come to mind! And don't forget that Empire isn't part of the Big 3 because it has a residency requirement. So test all you want, but you're still going to take 30 something credits with them.

As I recall, Charter Oak awarded 18 credits for "humanities/arts" GRE subject exams (Psych; Eng Lit) and 24 Credits for "science" exams (bio, chem, engineering). In either case, one is given a "pass" rather than a letter grade.

I seem to recall as well that with Excelsior, they granted a maximum of 30 credits per exam, depending on one's score.

    Peace,

    Matt

    Kaz,
I appreciate your response. Did you ask about the cumulative GPA?

They'll give 33 for the mathematics subject only. 30 for the rest.
