Advice from I'm an old hand here.

A recent look at in the forums shows me that a certain genius teacher on testing is getting too much neglected.

The late (I presume) Walter Pauk, reading prof at Cornell University.

His best book for people here, by far, is from 1987:
"A User's Guide to College," Walter Pauk, Ph.D. (Paperback, 1987)

    ISBN-10: 0890614814
    ISBN-13: 9780890614815

Amazon no longer lists it. Best currently found at half.com, but be prepared to spend $. Up to $50! (At least $10-20.)

Why is this SO good? Pauk's clear pedagogy, as he covers his Cornell note taking method, and all the testing formats encountered by new (or born-again) college students.

This booklet-style review covers essay exams, short answer quizes, and multiple choice exams and much more, all in 6 to 10 pages for each. He tells you what they're looking for, how to study for it, how to form effective answers, and then at the end even gives you a short quiz so you can check and see if you absorbed his advice!

PURE GOLD, my friends! Fore-warned is fore-armed. You'll be a happier and more successful learner for it.

His other book relevant here is "How To Study in College" (many editions), see amazon.com.
    http://www.amazon.com/How-Study-College-Walter-Pauk/dp/0618766456

By comparison with "User's Guide," this is a heavily padded 400+ page book. (Check is out at your public library instead of buying.) Not useful to me, but many reviewers at amazon.com swear by it. YMMV.

Where one should definitely investigate it is for any subject you find particularly difficult, from math to English comp to foreign languages. Pauk is still peerless, even when padded.
