    Hello,

I currently have the Official CLEP Study Guide 17th edition. The copyright is 2005. Is this ok to use for the current Social Sciences and History test? It has a sample exam for the Social Sciences and History CLEP. Also, this sample exam has 54 questions. Does the real exam have 54 questions as well? All CLEPS are online now right? Is this the best thing for my wife to study? What do you recommend? Please don't be shy.

As a side note, my wife has completed 17 FEMA courses, so she is done with her free electives portion of the BA in liberal studies at TESC (Thanks to Cookderos, Hillie, pugbelly and others). She needed 16.5 in that area. So know, she is now preparing for this CLEP.

Please advise. I would like to thank all of you for your help so far. Although I am a long time DI member, I have not dealt with DANTES and CLEPS for a few years now. Thanks to all of you, my wife and I appreciate it.

    Respectfully,
    Abner :)

It's also be many years since I took a CLEP exam, but isn't Social Sciences & History worth 6 credits? If you take the two US History exams (US History I & II) that's also 6 credits, and you can then take a social science exam for 3 or 6 more credits without worrying about duplication.

It has 120 questions to be answered in 90 minutes.

I think your book will be fine. My edition is the 17th, and my son's friend just brought over his 18th edition, and the exams I checked were identical. The questions don't necessarily change, what can change is the ratio of questions spent on various topics, so you might want to take a peek at Borders just to confirm that your book as the current ratio.

Thanks for checking. Do you think instantcert would be good as well, or this book enough to study and hopefully pass?

I would use the Instantcert's specific exam feedback section. People who take the exam post their observations and experiences with the test. That thread, in my opinion, is where you REALLY want to spend some quality time.

Quick question- do you plan to take any of these exams:
US History 1 or 2, World History 1 or 2, American Government, Anthropology, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Psychology, or Sociology?
I took the ones in bold, and as a result I didn't need to study for Social Science and History. If you plan to take some of the subject exams, I suggest knocking them out, the content easily overlaps.

Yes. It is worth 6 credits.
Hmm. That is interesting Bruce. I had not thought of that. I had thought of the Social Science and History exam in my wife's case because the exam is 6 credits, and I figured 3 credits could go into the Gen Ed requirement, and the other 3 credits could go into the gen ed elective requirement.

So you are saying to take the History I exam, then the History II exam for 3 credits each. Then take the Social Sciences and history so they won't duplicate. I think you are on to something here.

Do me a huge favor, please look at this link which shows my wife's thread. Does it look like the 3 exams you mentioned will line up ok with her TESC BA degree evaluation? Let me know, I think you have a good point here.

Ok. I will check into the specific exam feedback section. Thanks! Also, what do you think about REA. It has been so long, I don't remember if REA was a study guide online or a book. Can you refresh my memory.

    Thank you,

    Abner :)

Kim already took Hist 170, History of the United States, and POSC - Government of the U.S. Would these cancel out the Hist I and Hist II CLEP?

REA is top notch. After using REA for US History 1, I never bothered with another brand. Excellent summaries, target material, great study quizzes with meaningful explanations. In fact, I never resold any of my REA books- I think they are excellent references.

Just a generic suggestion, at TESC you can email your advisor with a list of CLEPs you would like to take- they will plug them into your eval as "planned" credit. This is great so you can see that they work as you hoped, as well as a "place holder" so you can take other classes without everything shifting around.
If you should change your mind about planned coursework, you simply send your advisor another email.

That may work also; what I was thinking was taking US History I & II, then another social science exam (Anthropology, Psych, Sociology, etc.) for the extra 3-6 credits. I think the Social Sciences & History may duplicate credit for the US History I & II, although it may not and you could get either 3 or 6 more credits out of it.

Will they do that even if you are not enrolled? The only thing we have done is request an evaluation, and we were told the six month eval period expired, so Kim cannot access it online at the TESC website. That is ok. $75.00 bucks for an eval is the best money we could spend. I want to help Kim prepare for as many CLEPS and DANTES as she needs, then get another eval to see exactly where the credits are landing. Once we are within striking distance, we will formally enroll her. I don't care if we have to get 3 evals, it is well worth it. Hopefully by next year she can have her BA! In todays job market, I just don't want her to be without a BA. She is very bright, beautiful :), hardworker and a BA would really help her resume.

At this point, I am not going to request another eval until she gets some more CLEPS and DANTES done. The free elective are out of the way via FEMA! We are moving along. Maybe not as fast as some, but it will get done.

    Thanks once again!

Hmm! I see what you mean now. I misunderstood your comments. That is not a bad idea.

Just one thing. Kim has taken history and government at a CC. Please see below:

***Hist 170 History of the United States - 3 credits
***POSC Government of the United States - 3 credits.

Would either of these classes be considered duplicate to the History I and History II CLEPs?

Please advise. Any and all, please feel free to jump into this and add comments.

    Thanks,

    Abner
