I asked this in my other thread, but it's on the second page in the middle of a bunch of posts and though I could get a better answer by creating a new thread.

Can anyone here 100% confirm or deny whether the FEMA independent study courses that are eligible for credit are considered 100 level college courses or above?

And if so, when I complete the courses I need to and get the transcript from either FCC or TESC, does it actually say on the transcript if they were 100 level courses?

The reason I ask is I need to be able to prove to my USMC recruiter that these courses are 100 level or above, so I need something that will say that to be able to show him.

    Thank you in advance!

FEMA does not rate the Indepedent Study Courses for college credit. It is up to each college to decide what they want to do with the courses. One school gives credit, while another does not. One school decides a course is a 100 level course, while another school decides it is a 200 level course. There is no standard among all schools.

To show these courses to a Marine Corps reruiter you will have to get them put on a transcript somewhere. Thomas Edison State College is what I consider the best deal in the number of credits to earn and in cost.

Here is the course numbers that Thomas Edison State College assigns the courses.

    EDM 101 - IS001
    EDM 102 - IS002
    EDM 103 - IS007
    EDM 107 - IS230
    EDM 120 - IS120
    EDM 121 - IS324
    EDM 122 - IS288
    EDM 123 - IS195
    EDM 124 - IS275
    EDM 126 - IS208
    EDM 130 - IS279
    EDM 140 - IS393
    EDM 154 - IS005
    EDM 155 - IS346
    EDM 172 - IS301
    EDM 190 - IS008
    EDM 191 - IS010
    EDM 192 - IS011
    EDM 193 - IS111
    EDM 200 - IS292
    EDM 203 - IS139
    EDM 207 - IS240
    EDM 208 - IS241
    EDM 209 - IS242
    EDM 210 - IS244
    EDM 221 - IS630
    EDM 222 - IS600
    EDM 223 - IS015
    EDM 224 - IS235
    EDM 225 - IS631
    EDM 232 - IS386
    EDM 240 - IS009
    EDM 241 - IS394
    EDM 242 - IS271
    EDM 290 - IS632
    EDM 303 - IS513
    EDM 390 - Q534
    EDM 399 - IS003

    FIS 391 - Q118
    FIS 461 - Q318

    * Each course was worth 1 semester credit hour. IS009 was worth 2 semester credit hours.

    Jag,

The list Michael posted shows how the FEMA credits (IS and FIS courses) match up on TESC's transcripts to the EDM courses. As you can see, all are at least 100 level.

I still strongly recommend you talk to your recruiter first to make sure he'll accept these credits. he should, but better safe than sorry..

I also strongly recommend you book all of your credits through TESC, not just the FEMA courses, so when the USMC reviews everything it's all right there on one transcript.

    Jagc,

You should recruit two poolees; then you'll be contracted as PFC/E-2. This way is faster than earning 15 credits within 4 months.

    That is my recommendation...good luck.

Thanks guys. I've completed 5 of the FEMA courses so far, since just last night. I hope to have 15 of them completed no later than Wednesday of this week.

Are there any differences in the transcripts between FCC and TESC? I've read from doing searches here that some places will only accept the credits if they came from FCC and not anywhere else, so mabye it's worth it to spend the extra money to have them on an FCC transcript as opposed to a TESC credit bank?

    Thanks again.

I would be cautious about credit banking.

Were you told you had to take classes rather than CLEP if so credit banking might not work. You might be better off paying the 60 dollars per credit hour and having it recorded as classes taken rather than a credit bank which may not meet your needs.

But again it is best to check with the people who will make that decision rather than people here making an educated guess.

FCC will cost more per credit hours if you do 15 courses.
FCC offers less credits overall if you take all FEMA courses.
FCC gives only 100 level credit.
TESC gives 100 level credit and higher for many courses.
TESC is a 4 year college, FCC is a 2 year college.
    TESC is better known.
TESC offers you better future options to get a degree.

I believe it is best to go with TESC and then make other school see that FCC doesn't own the FEMA courses. Excelsior first told me no and I pointed out the facts and they then said yes to my transfer of credits from TESC. As more and more do this, FCC will hold less power over those who don't understand that FCC does not own the FEMA cources.

    Jag,

Your questions regarding FCC and TESC are whi I am urging you to check with your recruiter. The TESC transcript should work just fine but you need to be sure. FCC will work without difficulty but it's going to run $60 per credit ($900) and I believe they require you to take a test for each course to "validate" your knowledge of the FEMA material.

I e-mailied FCC and they just said once you have completed the courses you simply fill out the college credit form and mail or fax it in with payment. They never said anything about taking a test for each course.

Update: I just called and they didn't say anything about a second test or exam.

Well, FCC would be the safer route, but I can't imagine why the USMC wouldn't accept the TESC transcript. It's the same thing...TESC transcripts FEMA credit the same way FCC does.

While we're on the subject, has anyone else not been receiving e-mails from FEMA after completing their final exams? I've taken and completed two courses today and have not received any e-mails, I even resubmitted my exam after about 2 hours and tried a different e-mail address and still didn't receive anything.

That does not seem right - I have gotten emails within a couple of minutes for the last couple that I have taken. One thing the site mentions is to make sure that EMI email address is on your "friendly email address" list or the email will be picked up as spam.

    Emergency Management Program

Frederick Community College (FCC) currently awards pass/fail credit for the completion of FEMA EMI Independent Study courses. Students who have previously received credit for the EMI Independent Study courses may earn letter grades through the module exams and those courses may be used to complete the Emergency Management Associate Degree, Emergency Management Certificate, or the various Letters of Recognition (LOR’s) offered by FCC. The credits are recorded on the student’s transcript and may be transferred, at the discretion of the receiving institution, to any other college of the student’s choice. The pass/fail credits may be use as electives in any degree program at FCC (up to nine credits) or may be used as electives in FCC’s Emergency Management Program.

The non-EMI courses in the degree and certificate may be taken online from FCC or may be transferred into FCC from any other accredited educational institution. This allows students the flexibility of taking courses online or where they live.

As indicated in the program options, FCC requires Module Exams for selected FEM courses as part of the Emergency Management Program. For the students, this has the added benefit of allowing students to convert P (Pass) grades to A, B, and C letter grades, and therefore, obtain a Grade Point Average (GPA) for the FEM courses.
