The CLEP people (and ETS) have long threatened to do testing via computer.
This past summer, the move for CLEP was
    finally made.

Does anyone have any information--especially first-hand experience--on how this form
of testing differs from the old paper and pencil form?

(I notice that Excelsior has decided to await
    renorming before setting grade equivalents....)

Good Morning, I haven't found any information about the on-line clep but have read that nocti testing will be going online shortly. There are some tests that may be used for college credit.

I took the CLEP Humanities exam by computer testing on September 7th.

The testing software is easy to use. The format of the computer-based test is identical to the pencil and paper variety. You have the choice of answering each question immediately or marking it for review later in the session. Additionally, the software allows for review of all unanswered questions and has a session timer.

The best part is that your scaled score is given immediately at the end of the test session. This gave me a scare, as I was unaware that the scoring method had changed with the computer-based test, and I thought my scaled score of 72 was actually my raw score!

The American Council on Education recommendation for credit is a scaled score of 50, and my Excelsior adviser said they are adopting the ACE minimums for credit on each test.

    Good Luck!

    Regards,

    Tony

    Hi,

Does someone know more on the issue whether Excelsior currently does assign letter grades to any of the CLEP subject examinations?

    Thanks,

Unless the policy has changed very recently, Excelsior assigns letter grades to all of the CLEP subject exams that are passed with scores above the cutoff level with the exception of the language tests. The Dantes exams are handled in a similar manner.

Excelsior's publications, including The Student Guide to Credit by Examination can be downloaded in .pdf format here.

But I was told that Excelsior temporarily suspended assignation of letter grades to some of the CLEP subject examinations in connection with the newly available computer testing. They want to wait for the re-evaluation of this tests by ETS. Does someone know which CLEP subject examinations are affected?

    Thank you,

    Dennis Siemens
