My two highschool kids are going to start taking clep test. Their first one they are studying for is Analyzing & interpeting literature. Does anyone have suggestions for a couple others that wouldn't be to bad for them to try out. Thank you.

    1. Good for you to encourage them to do this! (And for homeschooling!)

    2. You've started with the best one, in my opinion. They might want to set a goal to do all five of the six credit-hour exams, as they cover the first year of college:

    English Composition
    Social Sciences and History
    Natural Sciences
    College Mathematics
    Humanities

If they finish all those, they'll enter as sophomores.

Look out, though, as some colleges won't take more than 30 credit-hours of CLEP, sometimes even less or none at all. Ask, ask, ask.

    Good luck!

I think the REA volumn on this exam gets pans. Too unreliable.

Here's what to do. Get a hefty college-level book on literature. Harpers or whatever. My favorite? The Norton Introduction to Literature, (Shorter Edition) by Alison Booth, J. Paul Hunter, and Kelly J. Mays.

In it, you'll find a terrific glossary of literary term sand examples, essays on poetry - how to break one apart - imagery, and other pointers on how to read lit with depth. Get through a chunk of the CLEP subject exam sample exam outline's list - then mock test the twenty (or so) questions.

This feedback will tell you how you're doing. Are you getting a grasp to the level required? Or is it too easy and you're already able? This "mid course" correction will let you know.

There are other sources, but these two (an solid lit anthology and the CLEP subject sample exams) are the best. Lit interp is mostly good sense combined with an appreciation of a literate vocabulary. Applying both to literary genres is the key to passing as well as acing the exam.

The best $400 bucks I ever spent was on the fees for my daughter to take several CLEP exams some years ago.

It saved me $14,000 in tuition, room ad board.

Orson, was that advice for the Analyzing Lit exam? If so, I'd honestly just start with the practice exam and see if any preparation is necessary. I'm not being cocky; I mean it when I say it's the easiest exam for credit I've ever taken.

American Lit and English Lit are much harder, though, and would require the sort of study that you suggest.

Take whichever they appear most prepared for.

Without question, I'd suggest the five general exams but with some pre-exam prep.

    English Comp. (6)
    Humanities (6)
    Social Science and History (6)
    Natural Science (6)
    College Mathematics (6)

    then the subject exams:

    Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (6)
    American Government (3)
    US History I (3)
    US History II (3)
    Intro Sociology (3)
    Western Civ I (3)
    Western Civ II (3)
Information Systems and Computer Applications (3)
    French, German, or Spanish (12)

A passing score on all of those would be about 69 semester hours of credit. Very few colleges will transfer that much credit by exam but Excelsior, Charter Oak, and Thomas Edison (and a few others) will and that's enough credit to be near complete on an AA/ASc.

Just a thought. The cost will be well under the cost of tuition for the actual courses -- just make sure you're not spending money on exams they aren't prepared to pass.

There is a big difference between US History at the HS level and US History at the college level.

A warning, though: some schools won't give credit for both the general exams and the individual subject exams. If they know where they may wish to go to university, that's helpful because you can ask them what their policies are on this.

Don't forget about the DANTES exams. They are cheaper and easier.

Thank you for your replies!!! It was a help. One of my daughters passed. The other received 45 out of 50 which i still feel is good considering she is only 15 and it was her first one. I am hoping the next one will be easier. Our next one is Sociology. Any help would be appreciated.

I used a set of videos by Standard Deviants called Sociology Part I and Sociology Part II ISBN 1-58198-029-9 and 1-58198-030-2

I blew this test away based just on what I learned in these videos and a vocabulary review.

The Introductory Sociology CLEP outline is online at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/ex_is.html

The key to this exam (and most others) is vocabulary. Get a good college level sociology textbook and study the glossary.

    Good luck!

The Dantes Exams on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and World Religions were very reasonable tests. On the DANTES web site you can get info on the tests and which books to study from.

IMO the American Gov't CLEP test was a piece of cake. It's less material to study that "US History" and is still good for 3 social science credits.

I didn't take U.S. History, but I did take American Government and agree it was pretty easy.
