Start with Cracking the CLEP and see how practice exam/essay goes. Keep studying and practicing. REA General Exam Guide and Comex also cover this exam. Not really that tough if prepared.

I used the Comex guide and passed it twice. Once with essay and once without. It is pretty easy

    I'm curious: what is "English"?

Is it expository writing? Many universities require their students to pass an introductory writing class. My feeling is that if you already write reasonably well, then you can probably make it over that hurdle without much difficulty.

Or is it the history and criticism of literature in the English language? That might be harder to prepare for in a few hours without having read any of the literary works that are the subject of the class. Or at least it should be harder.
