Has anyone taken some of the Ohio University tests? These are the by subject exams for things like Amer Lit , Ancient Greece, Shakespeare.

COSC will take the transfer credits so I was wondering how tough the tests were.

No idea! How much do they cost?

    Greetings.

Since 2000, I have taken three of Ohio University's (http://www.ohiou.edu/independent/) CCE (Course Credit by Examination, http://www.ohiou.edu/independent/ccewords.htm) tests. Two tests dealt with electronics technology, and one dealt with math. If I were to pick one word to describe them all, that word would be "fair".

Based upon my statistically insignificant sampling, they eschew multiple choice / machine processable exams in favor of exams that truly test ones abilities. On all of my exams, my scores were not only a result of my answers, but how I got my answers (i.e., my work was reviewed, too).

As to the easiness of the exams, that really depends upon you. I found that the exams were easy when I new the correct answers to the questions. When I didn't know the answers, I found the test far more difficult.

N.B. Previously, they wouldn't tell you anything about the exam until after you paid your fee. Now the OU web site gives a more in depth description of the exams. (Tip: Want to know more about a OU DL course? Check out the OU CCE description, if available. The CCE descriptions give more details than the IS course description!) You will (presumably) still receive a complete booklet describing what will be on the CCE after you enroll.

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek

P.S. Remember: OU uses a quarter hour system. The means that, for example, you pay for 4 Q/H credits for a course/exam that would be 3 S/H elsewhere, but you earn only 2.667 S/H credits!

    Wrong word

Okay, good point. Maybe I should have asked more about format than ease. Or maybe asked how they compared to CLEP or GRE?

    Your description was quite good.

Thank you for the information on the credit schedule, I did notice that on the website.

I took the Shakespeare – the Comedies exam and got an “F” and it did not mean fantastic. I will tell you what I remember from the test. I did take it a couple of years ago and have tried to block out the painful memory.
The test was made up of three sections. One section gave a quote and you had to identify the play and character. One section gave a passage and you had to explain the scene before, during, and after the quote. I think one section was character identification.

I read all five plays that were covered and the Cliff Notes and Cliff Complete notes also. I got an “F” but I read all the material and did not take the test for about a month and in that month I did not pick up a book.

It is passable if you study better than I did. When I called the school, they told me what the format was.

My opinion, for easy credit, stick with the CLEP/DANTES - they are multiple choice.

    Good luck.

I took one CCE exam (ETCH something-or-other... it dealt with computer assembly language). I thought the test was quite fair and very easy, if one studied and understood the reading material on the syllabus. As mentioned, it was not a multiple choice test - it got graded by an actual professor.

    Upper level needed

Thank you very much for the detailed description.

Unfortunately, I've already tested out of the lower level credits. I need upper level credits so I'm looking at ECE, GRE and these. OU offers several upper level and the website mentions that other courses could also tested out.

    Re: Upper level needed

I tested out of several ECE upper level classes to meet the requirements but I understand the tests I took are now lower level.

Please do not misunderstand about the OU exam. They are not impossible to pass. I just did not prepare for them and failed.

    Very witty, Richard :p

How's your engineering degre going? Getting ahead?

    Dear JLV:

    Greetings!

    Witty? Did I make a joke? <g>

And a correction: I'm pursuing an "engineering'ish" degree, not an engineering degree. <g>

Aside: I wonder if my term "engineering'ish degree" will catch on someday? Can't you just imagine MIT offering a BSEEISH? I can, but I could probably use some sleep. <g>

As to how my degree is going, lets just say I wouldn't rent a tux for my graduation just yet. <g>

One problem I'm NOT having (thus far) is with my first "contract learning" contract (http://www.cosc.edu/Advising/ContractLearning.cfm). A lot of nice things have been said about COSC, and some of them may even be true <g>, but COSC's Ms. Israel and the mentor she found for my contract literally couldn't have been more helpful or cooperative! Should OU's CCEs prove wanting, one could do worse than consider "contract learning" with COSC.

I hope everything is going great with you!!!

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek
