Indian Business School of Advanced Management Studies

    Hello,

I am considering applying for a academic program (Doctorate in Management Studies) of Indian Business School of Advanced Management Studies.
INDIAN BUSINESS SCHOOL OF ADVANCED MANAGEMENT STUDIES (IBSAMS)
I was wondering what your thoughts are of this business school. Is it legit?

    Gz

Ownership of the Internet site is hidden behind a privacy screen - not a good sign, to me. The real owner - and his/her country of location - remain a mystery. However, the school does appear to have a physical presence - 1440 square feet in an office building in Mumbai.

The very first certificate of accreditation/recognition shown on the site is its US National Retail Federation membership! From the site:

"All our courses carry this affiliation on the certificates issued. This enables the candidate a higher evaluation of all pursued educational courses making them globally acceptable especially in India, USA, Canada, Australia & NZ, and especially the entire Middle East, GCC & North Africa."

Well, I've never before heard of NRF membership being universally accepted by established universities or official credential evaluators. Same with the school's ISO 9001 certification, which is also shown as a credential. What it has to do with academic quality or legitimacy is beyond me. Well, at least they don't put the ISO 9001 seal on their diplomas. At least, I don't think they do.

After reading them carefully, I'm confused as to whether / how some of the purported university and academic approvals etc. shown (e.g. IGNOU and DEC) apply to this specific organization - IBSAMS. So, I'm content to remain doubtful. I also don't see where it has any authority - UGC etc. to confer its own degrees. It may be, as it claims, a study centre affiliated with Karnataka State Open U. - and that school is undoubtedly "real." However, I've been taught that dealing with quite a few of India's many, many "study centres" is not a good idea - especially for foreigners. I'd say - if you want to earn a degree from Karnataka State Open U., why not apply there?

Another thing: This place lists fees for a doctorate at 30,000 rupees a year - roughly $450 US. So what school is named on the doctoral diploma?
I checked Karnataka State Open U's distance fee schedule - no distance doctorates shown. See for yourself. Karnataka State Open University Distance Education|Course Fees|Fee Structure

Again - I wonder what school's name appears on that doctorate? Does it come with the National Retail Federation's seal? Well, maybe a real expert in Indian Distance education will show up here - we have at least one such member. I hope we hear from him.

The KSOU affiliation seems to be only for the BBM and some MBA courses. However, UGC does not allow universities to setup study centers outside their jurisdiction (typically the State). So this looks totally fishy. Here's a list of authorized study centers of KSOU, and IBSAMS is not on the list:

All other affiliations have no academic value. I would not spend a single rupee on this entity.

Well, if it's price-point, here's a real, Ministry-approved Malaysian school that won't break the bank: Almadinah International University/ Among others, they offer these programs

PhD in Islamic Banking and Finance
    PhD in Business Management
    PhD in Economics
    PhD in Accounting

I'm told PhD costs are about $6,500. That's even cheaper than a South African school. Last I heard, some SA schools were averaging less than $3,000 a year, but I'd say there's a good chance at a SA school, it might take you longer than 3 years - it very often does.

Thank J. I am not a "qualified" expert, but I've been watching the Indian DL scenario for the past 30 years or so.

Believe it or not, so am I - until UK's "Brexit" is done, anyway. That's a pretty low ceiling but I'm looking at some possibilities and will mention any limitations. Will post when I've had a chance -- give me a day or so.

No. Found nothing Euro / British at all. I checked everything I could think of. Swiss, French, Scandinavia etc. No distance Ph.D. programs in that price range. Bottom line seems to be around 10,000 euros. Some schools, some countries will waive tuition or grant scholarships for promising EU Ph.D. seekers - but that's all residential - not distance.

Plenty of Euro & British distance Ph.D programs - but not anywhere near 6,000 Euros. India, Malaysia - yes, it's possible. South Africa - barely, just perhaps, if you took the minimum time. I think that's 3 years. Good schools though...very good. Would be worth stretching the budget a bit, if possible.
