Anyone ever apply to this program? Any thoughts on it? Know anyone who studied there? Seems to be a top program and a great distance learning (w/ a few on campus trips) opportunity.
Don't know anyone who did the programme, but you might want to look at Henley also. Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Additional UK DBA program possibilities: Aston Business School Executive DBA (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS) The Executive DBA - Doctorate of Business Administration University of Liverpool DBA (AACSB): 100% online assessment, no travelling to campus DBA - Doctor of Business Administration | Online Degree Programme Edinburgh Business School-HWU (…can be completed entirely via self-study + EBS supervisor) Self-study DBA from Edinburgh Business School
You’re welcome. BTW, all the listed distance DBA possibilities (Manchester, Henley, Aston, Liverpool, and/or EBS) are all recognized /ranked (some higher) UK business schools. Of course as you’re already aware … the program that will ultimately best meet your academic enquiries, time commitment, doctoral supervisor /committee availability for your particular area of concentration, as well as budget and travel constraints (if any) are likely to be included as principal factors in shaping your final decision. The very best to you in your endeavor...
Ha, interesting that the Edinburgh Business School is not at the University of Edinburgh....But at Heriot-Watt which is a much less regarded Uni. Finding a DL DBA or PhD program from a top University is harder than I expected....
Similarly, Nottingham Law School is connected to Nottingham Trent University rather than the University of Nottingham. But it's not like EBS isn't in Edinburgh or NLS isn't in Nottingham, so I don't see anything odd about it.
According to the 2015 Guardian ranking of UK universities, Heriot-Watt ranks 13th in the UK and 2nd in Scotland.
Yup, saw that ranking, but I find it a little suspect that Heriot-Watt is only highly ranked on Guardian's survey while there's a huge discrepancy w/ Heriot-Watt on most other rankings. Even Wikipedia shows the HW's other rankings placing the school btwn 33 and 42...Also, chatting to my Uni friends in the UK, they don't consider it to be a top 15 Uni by any measure....they actually think University of Edinburgh is a much better Uni (more of an 'old money' type of institution). Of course HW can name it's b-school anything it wants, but I just found it strange that it, as a much younger Uni, HW picked a name (Edinburgh Business School) that is so similar to the University of Edinburgh's b-school (University of Edinburgh Business School).
The contrast between Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University with University of Edinburgh Business School (or vice versa) seems to be a somewhat moot point in that you are considering a distance /online and/or self-study DBA program. EBS-HWU has such a program with no campus visits required. Conversely, the University of Edinburgh PhD program does not offer that degree route as an alternative.
"Much younger" seems pretty relative considering that Heriot-Watt University is coming up on its 200th birthday....
University of Edinburgh, Founded: 1583. Heriot-Watt University, Founded: 1821, Interestingly "the world's first mechanics' institute" Both are very "aged" but 238 years is a significant difference. To me it would be all about the $'s or in this case £'s difference!
I disagree...a b-school founded in 1997 is very young... Edinburgh Business School Founded 1997 University of Edinburgh Business School Founded 1918
PhD....senses...burning....:aargh4: You won't find many rankings for Heriot-Watt's graduate business school (EBS) because they choose not to participate in them. They have long argued that rankings are arbitrary, mainly invented by magazines and newspapers based on inputs only they assume matter (like size of library, size of classrooms, student faculty ratio, GMAT scores, etc) that in reality have nothing to do with the quality of the program. However, you will find Heriot-Watt in rankings for the university overall, and for departments/programs outside of EBS. The university is very old, but the graduate business school is very young. EBS is sort of a black sheep in that it was built from the ground up as a distance learning program, based on years of management education research started by Professor Lumsden when teaching at Stanford University. They don't participate in magazine rankings, they don't like programmatic accreditation like AMBA and AACSB, and Professor Lumsden's research showed that having a prior degree had little bearing on how well one performed in an MBA program. Hence, you can start the program without having any degree at all! (This rebellious streak was one of the reasons I was attracted to their program. ) Halfway through I transferred into their on-campus program in Edinburgh. All of my professors on campus were also professors at some time with the big B-schools like Wharton, Stanford, INSEAD, and yes, even the University of Edinburgh. If you are looking for a high-quality MBA/DBA, EBS is a great choice. If all you are looking for is a fancy name to put on your CV, then you should probably look elsewhere. "Heriot-Watt" just doesn't have a nice ring to it.
