I am a sales and operation manager in the speciality chemical division of a global oilfield services company. I have an undergrad degree in chemistry and math, and have served in R&D, engineering, business development, and account manager rolls. I have a strong technical and sales background and I am looking to broaden my management skill set, gain additional tools to help my team, and make myself more competitive for upper management. My company has a robust training department where university professors will give short courses in finance, management, ect. which I will take advantage of when nominated.

On a personal level, one of my goals is to earn a pH.D. in a business related field, and my personal mission statement is to live a life of love and servant leadership while redemptively impacting the market place. I want to do good while doing well.

Given these goals, is a M.S. in Management a good idea or should I look at something else?

CSU Global does offer this degree and I could specialize in organization leadership. I would have to pay very little out of pocket of a degree from here, however, I am concerned about the academic rigor, professor availability, and perception of this school. Any insight would be appreciated.

Why would you be concerned about those things? Do you know something that would cause you to be concerned?

    Hi Chemguy.

I have a similar career track as you. I work for one of the big 4 oil and gas service companies but instead chemicals, I came up in the drilling services side of the business. I have an undergraduate degree in geology and in management and an MBA. While the management courses added value, what I can tell you is the courses that really made me more effective were the accounting and finance courses in my MBA. I have been promoted several times since earning my MBA and am no longer in the product line but in general country management.

I would seriously consider an MBA over a plain management degree.

One last point - don't sweat where you get the degree from. You are well along in your career. At this point it is about knowledge and checking the box. The only way this would be any different is if you went to Harvard. As long as you get a regionally accredited degree you should be fine.

    Good luck!

    Eric,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I am certainly looking to further my financial and accounting knowledge. I will look at an MBA.

    Regards
