I just transferred to a 4 year university, and I applied for MIS. The fall quarter will start soon, and I still dont know if I love MIS or not. I like Accounting too. I want to get a master degree. My dream is to start my own business so which major is better for me?

The Cons pp told me about MIS: as I get older I will not able to update my skills like the young students, and I will get laid off and will be hard to find a different job because company like young smart students and salary is also low because they have no experience.

I'm so indecisive, I need to figure this out now before too late. Any advice would be really appreciated.

I work in IT now. I have a masters degree in IT with a concentration in information management systems. I am currently studying to take the CPA exam in a year or two.

My personal opinion is that you would be better off studying accounting. It is much easier to go for the Accounting BS, then get a cheap MSIS if you want one. Also, there is more demand for accountants than MIS people. Plus I see more junior positions for accountants than MIS people. Get your accounting degree, work for a year or two while doing a masters (in accounting or MIS). Then take the CPA exam. With a CPA AND some MIS experience there are a TON of options for you. You could do straight accounting. work in AIS (Accounting Information Systems), go into auditing (there is a growing IT component to auditing now).

The beauty of the CPA exam is that between the test itself, the education requirements, AND the experience requirements, there is a fairly significant barrier to entry for others. Combine that with the fact that accounting (like IT) is one of those ESSENTIAL services that any decent size company needs, and you have a decent amount of job security.

Accounting all the way. You can get into MIS from accounting. It's much harder to go the other way. IT auditing is a huge growth field if that's an interest for you, and accounting is a great background for small business. Plus, if small business fails you have a nice insurance policy with an accounting degree.

I'd go with accounting as your major. Could you minor in MIS? I think that could be extremely helpful. If not, then definitely look in to getting a master's in accounting information systems/information systems. I think that would be very beneficial.

I have degrees in both areas MIS and Accounting. I second the idea of getting a CPA and then a MS in MIS or AIS. There are a lot of opportunities in IT auditing, forensics, AIS, etc that require both backgrounds.

I also agree about the risk of becoming obsolete in a short period of time with an MIS degree.
