    Hi all,
I am considering an MBA and am wondering what the cons and benefits are for a school like California coast is. Who if anyone recognizes these degrees. My Doctorate and Undergrad are both from RA Colleges, but i dont have the time or ability to take in seat classes, and the cost of DETC is hard to beat along with the ability to complete it quickly..

Can you all share your experiences with yourDETC CCA or other school MBA and how its benefitted you in life?

    Hi there,

There are many threads which will give you an idea about the pros and cons.

Here are some points from my point of view:

    Pros

    usually cheaper then other degree
more flexibility in courses and time frame
Schools give more attention to the students

    Cons

In the USA you can not use it if you want to teach
Not recognized by all business and or states i believe
Quality can be very good but also really bad, try to find out by looking at reviews at:

GetEducated.com | Review, Rate, Rank & Compare Online Colleges & Degrees

Will not get you entrance to PHD programs

I'm not trying to pick on rdl50 here but I'm wondering, is this really true? I'm sure that I'll never do the homework to decide this issue either way but this idea that DETC degrees are less expensive than RA degrees is commonly perpetuated. I'd be very willing to bet that there are some RA MBA degrees that are less expensive than some DETC MBA degrees.

The Venn diagram does have an intersection, but the RA circle is definitely on the more expensive side of the page. (If that makes sense.)

I'm not convinced DETC programs are necessarily cheaper. There are numerous RA State Universities offering "online" MBA's with tuition the same or lower than DETC schools!

What is your "low cost" threshold? Basically what is your idea of inexpensive, under 20K, 15K, 10K?

All these programs are RA MBA programs for less than 10K:

    Eastern New Mexico University-Main Campus
    Master of Business Administration
    (NM)
    $5,978

    Wayne State College
    Master of Business Administration
    (NE)
    $7,500
    3
    A
    Fitchburg State University
Master of Business Administration / Management
    (MA)
    $8,310

    Amberton University
Master of Business Administration / General Business
    (TX)
    $8,460

    Chadron State College
    Master of Business Administration
    (NE)
    $9,000

This link has AACSB accredited programs, some for less than 15K. It is hard to recommend NA schools nowadays, specially with so many RA schools offering MBA programs online.

Another con is that it cannot be used to meet the CPA requirements in most states. The OP might not care about this but thought should mention this.

It makes complete sense to me. After all, You've got all the Ivies plus every other top 50 college in the country offering an MBA and they're not just giving them away. It's clearly going to skew the numbers. But that doesn't mean that there aren't MBA degrees out there (such as from local state universities) that are not perfectly acceptable and less expensive than some (not all) DETC MBA degrees. At a certain point you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to spend an extra $500.00 to get an RA degree. Ane extra 1K? Personally, although I'm probably the most frugal person on this board, I'd spend an extra 1K to get an RA MBA (as opposed to a DETC MBA. But that's just me.

OK, I sprinted through this list and if I read correctly, the first 8 of the top 10 were RA degrees and 9&10 were DETC. To me that seems like "case closed." Let's stop thinking about DETC degrees as being automatically less expensive than RA degrees.

Thanks for doing the homework Hadahi.

The search for RA schools offering DL programs at lower costs than NA schools almost always comes up fruitful. So here's the question: in what way or ways would doing a degree from a DETC-accredited school be advantageous?

I recall Aspen being quite generous for credit transfer, it used to give credit for Microsoft certifications towards a Masters degree.

Some DETC schools have no proctored exams or are quite easy to pass.

I have only experience with Penn foster college as I have taken few classes with them to satisfy continuing education credits, the few classes I have taken were just multiple choice exams taken straight from the text book. You were allowed to take the exams multiple times for better grades. I completed the classes in one day. A lot easier than any traditional 3 credit course at a regular school.

I think the DETC MBA can be good for someone that doesn't really want to slave much for the degree and wants general business knowledge. It also helps to fill the gap in a resume that needs an MBA for a general business job. I honestly don't think it makes much difference if a resume says MBA Penn Foster, Aspen or MBA Capella, Kaplan, NCU, TUI, Walden, etc. At the eyes of the employer, they are put in the same basket of internet schools that are accredited.

The OP already has a doctorate so the MBA is just to show some business knowledge. If the OP wants something cheaper that adds value to a resume and with more credibility than a MBA from a DETC school, I would recommend a Certified Management Accountant designation or Project Management Professional. A lot cheaper and more valuable than a no name MBA.

    The market at work!

I get a small chuckle about the extremely good deals out there for MBAs. My favorite example is Taft University (DETC). They charge $225/semester hour for their 36 hour MBA. $8,100 total. Not bad but not the cheapest, either.

Ahh, but for their 36 hour Master of Science in Taxation they get $395/semester hour, $14,220 for the whole schmeer.

Same school, same accreditation, same degree level. Same faculty, probably. But the rivers are running bank-full of online MBA programs while the handful of MST D/L programs out there tend VERY expensive. So WHTU can charge what the market will bear.

    Oops. My mistake.

The Taft U. MST is 30 hours, not 36.

But the credit hour rates are correct and on occasion, WHTU discounts the total MBA. Discount the MST? Dream on!
