    Hello All,
Looking for your opinion here. The School of Business at Emporia State University is getting ready to roll out an online MBA program and I would love to hear your thoughts on what unique things your online professors have done in the past to make your courses interactive? Thanks for the feedback!

I REALLY REALLY like it when my online professor spams me with endless ads for the college....oh wait, no I don't.

Well, I can tell you one thing that I didn't like...group assignments. The problem with group assignments is that you always have at least one person in the group who doesn't want to pull his weight and relies on the efforts of others to get to the finish line. Lame, says I.

Hi Jennifer, This is actually a staff and/or student, and we are asking them to understand more about online education, and we are all trying to learn more about how we serve students better. I understand that difficult responses are a part of the "real world" so they should be ready for it, but as a member for over a decade, I have recommended this site as a resource, which I hope will be the case.

    1. Fast turnaround for grades. Should not take more than 48 hours or 72 hours max.
    2. Fast turnaround for replies to emails. Should not take more than 24 hours or 48 hours max.

Students want to be cared for and that's demonstrated with timely responses and grades from professors.

Online courses are basically correspondence courses that use the internet as a medium of quick knowledge-transfer, instead of using the slow postal service.

The bottom line is that the learning remains self-initiated. Students get out of it no more than they put into it.

Play special attention to what you folks are using for your online format. I usually take two courses at a time from two different colleges, and one of them has an online format that makes me cringe every time I'm forced to to use it. For me personally, that can make or break it for me. People will complain about instructors ect,; but I'm trying to tailor my response to things you folks could have a hand in changing.

Yikes. I'm guessing you've never graded 10-page papers for a class of 30 before. I never go a full week but 48 hours isn't practical for many contexts.

I provide videos to supplement the content (videos of me explaining more complex information or reflecting on the objective of the assignments, etc) and generally get lots of positive feedback on the fact that it proves I'm a "real person."

Thank you all so much for your feedback! We are trying to understand what students respond well to in an online format and what scenarios they have not enjoyed. We currently have online classes in the MBA program and faculty do ask their students for feedback, but I wanted to reach out to this online community to see what your thoughts are! I appreciate your comments!

I like that getting stuck in traffic or being assigned work at 4:55 does not affect my grade as long as I can manage the workload in some way.

I like that as our lives change and relocation is a possibility, I don't (in most cases) have to abandon my studies or start all over again.

I like the flexibility and range of degrees and programs available.

I LOVE having access to multimedia course materials that I can repeat as many times as needed.

    Like
    - Flexibility
    - No expenses on campus travels (gas, vehicle, parking, toll road, and etc)
    - Video courses, so students can review the lecture at anytime

    Dislike
    - Tuition is more expensive than campus students
    - Most of school charge extra for technology fees; it is understandable that technology costs. However, distance learning students do not use most of campus facilities. So, in the compensation between the two, distance learning students should not be charged for extra fees.
    - Networking and classroom interaction in term of debate or discussion
    - Group Project or assignment (Not everyone is participating)

I like the fact that I'm not in some live class hostaged by a classmate who keeps blabbing about his entire life, as I'm looking at the professor hoping he'd shut him up so that we could move on to the next topic -- as I'm also looking at my watch thinking I could be home having dinner right now or actually working on my assignment for this class... :)

    Like:
Being able to do the coursework on an asynchronous schedule.
Being able to work at my own pace.

    Dislike:
Forced synchronous classes. (Keep in mind that a lot of people taking the online courses have jobs or other responsbilities) that preclude their sticking to a regular schedule)
Forced slow progress. (Dislike waiting for the class to open up more modules or information about the course, so that I cannot "work ahead" and get it all done.)
Weak Grading. (This applies more to essays than automated multiple-choice -- prefer that a higher standard of work output is required.)
Team projects. (This allows slackers to profit. Plain and simple. There needs to be type of team projects where individuals can be assigned and graded for their "portion" of the project, without causing undue harm to the others. Everyone knows that the person who wants the "A" in the course will do everything if necessary, to keep their grades up.)

    Hope this helps.

Hi, There are many things that every student loves about it like- reliability, makes one to better understand, enhance performance, creates lesser boundary between student and teacher.
