So one thing I've noticed during my research is the plethora of different MBA choices there are to select from; accounting, finance, leadership, global management, marketing, under water basket weaving, ect . .

So riddle me this Batman, which one offers the greatest utility? What did some of you MBA holders choose to emphasize in, why, and looking back was it a good choice?

First, it depends on where you want to work (field not company). If you hate finance and accounting, don't focus there. I got my MBA in Marketing for a few reasons.

I worked for a company and was attached to the marketing team. Working with $350-400M in contract revenue and driving market share. Using the knowledge gained and applying some smarts we increased market share by $50M in 3 years and opened new revenue streams.

Also, I wanted to teach marketing classes and a very smart man suggested I get an MBA in Marketing because they are always looking for someone with a PhD, a degree in marketing, and industry experience to teach grad level classes. Shortly after I completed my degree I was teaching. I easily earned my money back and love teaching for the school and the classes.

My "guess" would be that project management, management, or marketing are the more general focuses and offer great utility.

Am I happy with my choice - yes but I wish I would have done a double major of marketing and finance.

I am currently doing an emphasis in accounting. Can't really say I have a specific end goal in mind with it, other than it builds on the AAS-accounting degree I already have and I am hoping it offers me career flexibility when I need it. I was wanting to pursue UND's program regardless and international business was the only other MBA emphasis they offered. Now that my career trek has taken me back into healthcare, however, having a healthcare admin emphasis would've been nice. A graduate certificate may be pursued however, as a feather in the cap after my long vacation coming up from academic pursuits.

My professional background started out military, then law enforcement, and then transitioned into healthcare management which I have been doing since 2008 when I left the Police Department. I like healthcare and my focus is to move up the ranks into the executive level; CAO, Strategic Development, or Risk Management.

The school I'm strongly leaning towards only offers two tracks: Global Management or Strategic Management. I was planning on taking the Strategic Management track, but I have also been curious about learning Marketing or an Entrepreneurial emphasis.

I hate the fact that I have to choose one track, when in reality, I wish I could take them all . . . .

I decided to get my MBA at Emporia State University. They offer a general MBA along with 3 seperate concentrations; accounting, ERP, and IS. I thought that the general MBA was the best track for me, with an undergrad in Marketing! I enjoyed the program so much, I am now a recruiter for the School of Business! if anyone is interested in more info let me know. The School of Business is AACSB accredited and now offering an online MBA option. You can contach me at [email protected]! Thanks

Not so fast grasshopper, you have to put a little money in the bank before you make a large withdrawal with a shameless plug for your school. I am confident that as an alumni/ recruiter you believe Emporia State Univ is the best thing since sliced bread; but you might want to spend some time here on DegreeInfo to study up on the audience your targeting . . . .

I just got a general MBA althought I originally wanted to focus on Project Management but then realized it was better to just get the PMP cert so I dropped my PM classes and graduated six month early.

So choose a good program with balance and then add grad certs afterwards.
