Interesting article worth passing along: (CBS News and not US News; my mistake)

Interesting article. What it fails to address is schools like mine. Mid-tier B schools that have an online program where the diploma doesn't differentiate between in class, or online. I go to the University of North Texas, an AACSB accreditted school 100% online. My MBA will be from UNT. Not from UNT online, or anything like that. Despite the fact that I will never set foot in a physical classroom, the recruiter will be no wiser unless I choose to say something.

By the way, I think that obtaining a graduate degree online takes a lot more discipline than going to class. As a hiring manager, I actually prefer an online degree to a B&M, assuming that the school is reputable and RA.

Where do you work, and are you hiring? I've been looking for a hiring manager like you! :)

The article is dated September 2009 -- four years ago, which is a long time with respect to the rapidly-changing online universe. So you have to expect that it may be a little out of date.

For example, the University of North Texas only started offering online MBAs in 2007. There probably were very few (maybe zero) UNT online MBA grads at the time that the article was written.

Fair enough. I read it with a present day context. The online degree environment is rapidly changing.

I work for Ericsson, Inc. If you have solid telecommunications experience, there are a lot work places to end up.

A lot of MBAs are now offered in dual format. Unless you disclose the information, nobody will know.
By the way, most of the recognized credentials in business don't need you to step a foot in a class room. Anyone can earn a CFA, CPA, CMA, PMP, CISA among others without setting a foot in a class room.
My degree can be a BS from the Mickey Mouse club college but if I hold a CPA with a CFA, I wouldn't have problems calling for a job that pays 100K+.

don't laugh I'm trying to use a social medium to score a new gig here...have to do it myself, so far WGU's job hunt service completely sucks. "Your resume looks great, try to taylor your cover letters and tell everyone your looking for a new position".......uhh, thanks......I guess.

    :) :) :)

That's a little over simplified as in most states the CPA exam does require a minimum of 150 hours of education beyond high school. It could be argued that getting the CFA, CMA,CISA or PMP might be very difficult with out someone stepping foot in some form of post secondary education(This does not mean you need an MBA)

Also, back to the original topic, Going to the best MBA school you can will increase the value of the degree. A Fuqua MBA(Duke) is going to get you further than an MBA from Amberton. It's also going to cost a lot more.

This is certainly an area for WGU to improve in, but they're throwing money in too many other directions currently. I figure when there's enough supporting data, they'll sharpen their post-degree job placement offerings.

And to be fair, many job seekers need more help with resumes, personal marketing and "personal branding" than anything else. For these areas alone, a few pointers usually suffice.

You can always complete the 150 hours with cheap community college online credits as many states accept this option.

Online MBAs are not worth much in my opinion unless you are in a position where you can use your it for a better job.
When you go for an MBA, there are a lot of things you are missing with an online MBA as networking, Coop programs, direct contact with companies, etc.

I have seen few kids that work as tech support or help desk and then do an MBA from a for profit school that normally doesn't do much for them.

My point is that you don't need to invest too much money to improve your prospects, certifications are way cheaper and more effective than many of these online MBAs.
