I have noticed a lot of skepticism regarding the value a DBA holds for someone wanting to work in Academia, so I thought I'd share this pretty cool story.

One of my previous MBA professors from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) who earned her DBA from Grenoble Ecole De Management while working full-time, is now the business school dean at a state university

After earning her doctorate in 2007, she taught at several California State University's and moved her way up to Associate Dean at the College of Business & Public Admin at CSUSB. Now 6 years later, she is the Dean an AACSB-accredited business school.

She must be earning a really good salary at that college because in 2011 she earned approximately $130k as an instructor, a special consultant, and teaching at the extension center at CSUSB.
I will definitely be reaching out to her to pick her brain on her experiences at Grenoble and how her DBA was helped / hinder her in the past 6 years.

Why surprising with the credential … the Grenoble Ecole de Management (Graduate School of Business /GGSB) is well ranked internationally as well as triple accredited (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS) with its DBA accredited by AMBA.

Simply because she earned a DBA from a distance-based program rather than a B&M PhD, which we all know are better known as practitioner terminal degrees rather than academia research terminal degrees. From my experience reading the posts on this forum and researching professors at AACSB-business schools, I have found that a traditional PhD is the easiest and recommended route for academia.

At CSUSB College of Business and Public Admin, she was 1 of 50+ tenure track faculty members that had a DBA, the rest held PhD's; furthermore, at CSUS (AACSB-accrediated), where she also taught I was able to only currently find 1 tenure track faculty member with a DBA - again the rest had PhD's. Lastly, at Emporia State College there is only 1 DBA faculty member with the rest terminal degrees being PhD's or Ed.D's.

I agree that Grenoble Ecole de Management is very well ranked internationally and holds triple accrediation. Additionally, it is not surprising to see her in academia. However, I am pleasantly surprised to see that she was able to move up the ranks to Associate Dean at one university and then Dean at another one within such a short time frame with a distance-based DBA - especially considering the number of PhD candidates from traditional B&M schools she was up against for both positions.

Hi All - Long time no talk. I appreciate being noted as a success. Grenoble is a huge player in the AACSB community, as well as the degree is nothing less than rigorous. Questions and inquiries, feel free to contact me. I have been a member for about a decade.... man I feel old!

Hmm. Around here, it seems "we all know" a lot of things that we treat like rules when they're merely trends.
