    Hello all,

My girlfriend is looking to come to work in America with me, an American citizen. She is an accountant with the French Degree of DCG, Diplôme de comptabilité et gestion. I have looked at Credit Evaluation services, but I am pretty confused in all of this. I was wondering what should be the next step? Thank you for any and all information.

You may find some assistance here but please remember, this discussion board is related to distance learning and your question really has nothing to do with DL.

First she needs a visa, right? And then some sort of work permit? She'll need some evidence of equivalency regarding her professional credentials and she may need to take the CPA exam at some point. How are her English language skills? Maybe a tune up would help? At some point in the process she'll actually need a job, yes? You could start by looking into all those things.

    Welcome

    Bryan,

First, I’m assuming that her English skills are good. Does she want to work as an accountant? Does she want to sit for a CPA exam and get licensed? In what state (in the US) will you be residing? Does she want to work for a US office of a French company?

If her English is good, I would go online to the CPA Board of the prospective state(s) and find out the licensing requirements. You may need to email someone there for individualized questions. I think it would vary by state, but she may need to take some classes to pass the CPA exam: Topics such as US taxation may not have been covered in her education. She may even want/need to get a Master’s in Accounting (which she could do at a distance) in order to become licensed.

If she wants to work in a non-CPA capacity (e.g. my bank has accounting people who are not CPAs) she could consider sitting for the CMA exam – that might give her some instant credibility and get her feet wet and she probably meets the criteria to sit for it already. The CMA exam is focused on the non-auditing part of accounting, whereas the CPA covers auditing along with general accounting knowledge. CMAs are not licensed, but CPAs are and the rules are quite stringent and can vary by state of licensing.

    Good luck to you both!

She is fluent in English. And the state of question is Indiana, for the time being. So, I should email the CPA board of the states we may be living in, correct? And thank you for the information, I will get to work ASAP! Sorry for the post confusion in the wrong board, but thank you both very much for your help!

Yes, email the Indiana CPA board and peruse their site. Hopefully, they will be helpful to you.
