Best DBA/PhD Option for Someone Not Living Close to University

I live near Asheville, NC and am wanting to complete a DBA/PhD in business. There are no Universities/Colleges granting those degrees within at least 2 hours of me. The closest ones are 2.5-3 hours but don't have weekend programs or distance learning with some residency.

I'm trying to get a AACSB-accredited DBA/PhD but am having trouble coming up with good options. It appears the majority of online programs are not AACSB. The best option I have is KSU - Coles Business School DBA - but that's $90K.

I know I can step down in accreditation but I was looking for some thoughts on the AACSB option.

    Thanks!

I might as well ask since someone will - what do you plan to do with it?

I'm planning on teaching in a small non-AACSB school.

Can you do it with just a masters and why an AACSB school when you plan to teach at one that is not? Just curious questions...

There are a few threads with info on PhDs and I think these may help but they are not AACBS-

Why is AACSB accreditation necessary? Unless you're going to enter academia with this degree, I hardly think that form of accreditation matters.

Does AACSB even cover the doctorate? They didn't in times past, but perhaps I missed a change in their scope?

    Consider a foreign equivalent.

    Rich,

    AACSB does cover the doctorate.

If the OP's plans are to teach at an AACSB institution, the OP needs an AACSB doctorate. However, if the OP plans to teach at a non-AACSB institution, then a non-AACSB doctorate should work just fine. Of course; the OP would need to show experience, etc.

Thanks for the feedback, Shawn. I wanted to start my search with the AACSB and then go down from there depending on what I found. Which do you think would be better - a DBA/Phd in business or add the MBA to my Master of Enterpreneurship and get an EdD?

I'm confused. You can't do a traditional program because you live out in the middle of nowhere, fair enough. But your goal is to teach in higher education. Do you have a school that's right near you in mind already? If so, then ask them what you should do. If not, then you'd have to move anyway to take any position, so why wouldn't you be willing to move to get the degree you believe you need to be a competitive applicant for such a position?

    Why an EdD?

Go for the DBA/PhD option over an MBA + EdD. I don't see any advantage on putting time in for a second masters and then the doctorate. Additionally, in many business school circles, the EdD will place you at a disadvantage over the DBA/PhD.

FWIW - here is the faculty breakdown at my school:

    PhD - 4

PhD Student (comps in December) - 1

    EdD - 3

    JD - 1

DBA Student (2nd year in program) - 1

If I would like to teach at the small college level, what are the best online/partial residence programs for a business doctorate? I know having a B&M degree at a AACSB would be best but that probably won't happen. The college down from me is a small school with IACBE accreditation for the business school.

An option could be to do an EdD and then a post doctoral bridge in Business at an AACSB accredited school. This would cost less than $90K.

There are some British schools with AACSB accreditation that offer distance DBAs that would cost around $50K.
You can do a search in this forum for a list of british schools with AACSB accreditation.

    Grenoble Ecole de Management

Grenoble Ecole de Management (France) has a DBA program that is Triple-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA). Most of their residencies are in USA. You have to visit the campus in France twice. The Tuition is about $58K (excluding the travel cost and other personal expenses during the workshops).
Admission is competitive. You need to submit a formal proposal for your Dissertation as part of the application process. There are a few members here who have successfully finished the program and working in Academia.

Doing the DBA in the USA

I can give more details about the first Workshop after i come back next month.

A frequent, but not lately, contributor to DegreeInfo earned her doctorate at this institution a year or so ago and now teaches at a state university (I can't recall her name).
