I have a BS in Marketing and an MBA, along with almost 10 years of experience in the industry. I am contemplating teaching what I have learned and experienced to high school students in business courses. Does anybody have experience teaching high school with an MBA, and what is the demand? Also, does the MBA benefit me at all? The reason I am not looking to teach college is that my experience is limited. Thanks!!

I know several people (or have heard of several people) that transition into hs teaching with MBAs. All the examples I know of are people who worked in high finance and either made a ton of money and didn't need the long hours anymore or they burnt out . all of them became Math teachers. We had Econ and accounting courses at my high school, no marketing courses offered.

High school teaching pays well. In Wisconsin, teachers make more than the average worker. The benefits can't be beat and they only work 8-9 months out of the year. Imagine all the extra time one would have if one had their summers off.

You need to be "certified" to teach in public school systems. Go to the Dept. Of Education website for the state where you'd like to work and explore the requirements for certification. Pay special attention to the "alternate routes to certification." Be prepared to do a stint of internship/student teaching.

Teaching high school with an MBA? They'll probably wonder why you're slumming it.

We have had temps at my job with MBA's from very solid programs here in the Boston area, we had one last year with a PhD from Yale (granted not in a business discipline, but still). In this market I don't think any job can be considered "slumming it".

A friend is teaching High school in California with a PhD in Math. He is happy with this job as he spent about 6 years doing post docs for 30 to 40K a year with no benefits.

Few high school teachers in this forum have expressed their interest in pursuing PhDs in business.

I don't think is a bad move at all, most high schools pay based on your level of education so the MBA might help to reach a high pay check in the system.

The problem is that an MBA does not give you the right to teach at the high school level, the person in question would need to take a year M.Ed or B.Ed to qualify for a license in most places. The other issue is that is not easy at all to get a high school position at some places, there are people with good qualification that are waiting for an opportunity.
