So, yeah, about that MBA...

I should make a T-Shirt saying "All decisions subject to change."

I got carried away in sifting through all of the options and looking toward the future. After a re-re-reassessment, I realize that I could save my money and use the time I would have spent on an MBA toward things that are more important to me and that would have a much greater impact on my career.

For the same time it would take me to get one little MBA, and for $6000 less, I could do all of the following:

    • Get a BSBA from TESC.
    • Learn another language than I could have (I'm thinking Hindi or Swahili, on top of Arabic, which I've already decided to take up soon).
    • Get experience working as an interpreter/translator in more languages than I have been (yes, how about getting money for indisputably valuable experience rather than paying money for a degree of questionable value to me).
    • Gain more interpreter/translator certifications.
    • Learn valuable career and life skills via textbooks and the internet.
    • Opencourseware, here I come!!!
    • CPR certification, here I come!!!
    • Life. I'd rather live it.

Basically, I've come full circle and am now all the way back to my original goals. Finish a BA in something interesting to me and a BS in Business from one of the Big Three. The only difference is that I have changed to TESC, since it would be much less expensive for my situation.

I've always thrived as an autodidact anyway, and I get a sense of pride when considering that both of my degrees can come nearly exclusively through independent study. I think that if I'm ever asked to describe my educational experience, that I directed myself throughout the whole process adds a bit of intrigue to the fact that I neither have any formal training in languages, linguistics nor interpretation,. That's right, I did it aaaaalllll by myself :approve:

Just curious...how many languages do you currently know?

I think if your plan fits with what you want then go for it!!!!

I'm currently trilingual, with another language that I speak decently but not fluently, yet. I'm working on geting that language up to speed while starting on the other language(s) mentioned earlier- eventually getting up to 6 or so. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to go much higher than that, considering that even my first language, English, is continually improving. The big task is not to obtain fluency, but to keep maturing with the language in the same way one should with one's mother tongue.

THANKS! The fact that I have come full circle shows me what a waste of time my indecision proves to be. My recent personal study projects include mindtools for decision making- hopefully a real life changer for me :)

Sounds interesting!! I have decided to try and pick up Spanish since it is much needed really in this country anymore and in the work I hope to be in it could be very beneficial. Just not sure if I want to take courses or try and learn it on my own... any pointers?

I hear you with the indecision thing! With me as soon as I figure one thing out something else pops up to add something new to fret about for awhile....lol

  6. Pure curiosity, how do you learn the languages? Do you use Rosetta Stone, take classes, etc...?

MC is a language genius and always has been. He may be one of the few people that have so much talent that they do not need to go to school. I know one other person like that. He dropped out of his undergrad program and a few years later, with no degree, became a scientist at Rockwell. No joking! He is now CEO of a small technology company that creates telemetry systems. Good drummer too!

Yeah, me too. No sé mucho desafortunadamente I know about 100 unrelated words from working with Rosetta Stone but have not had time to go further. Actually, if I invested all of the time I waste on this board into learning Spanish, I would probably be fluent by now.

If I invested as much time in learning Malay or Chinese as I do on various internet forums, by now I'd be able to have a conversation with my GF and her family in one of their native languages, and also wouldn't miss about half the conversations she has with them about me(in front of me no less.)

Look at it this way -- if they're already given to doing that, then even if you learned one they'd likely just switch to the other!

But I know what I you mean. Everyone in Dominica, my wife's country, speaks English, but many also speak Antillean Creole, of which I've learned a bit to make things easier. I'm not fluent, but I'm good enough at it that people never know what I'll glean from spoken conversation, which is good enough. :)

MC, what languages do you speak, and what others are you studying?
