I have an AS from City University in Bellevue, WA. I attained the degree through their distance learning program that gave me credit for life / job experience. Bottom line is I was only required to take 5 courses, and to this day have not stepped foot in a classroom. I have read with great interest everyone opinion about distance learning and would like to know what are your thoughts on this degree?

    Mr. D,

I was also awarded an A.S. from the regionally accredited City University. Most of my credits were transferred from other schools. My remaining requirements were completed through DSST, CLEP exams and ACE evaluated military training.

How did City University evaluate your job/life experience?

Congratulations on your achievement! City University is a legitimate institution that is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). However, as I am sure you already know, City University does not grant credit for life or job experience. A maximum of 65 credits (out of the 90 required for the degree) can be transferred into the program, and the student must also fulfill specific core requirements for the degree. As their Web site states, “The A.S. in General Studies is designed to serve those with substantial non-collegiate, but nonetheless formal, prior education." The credits accepted in transfer may be non-collegiate, but they do specify it must be formal education. As such, they also specify what is suitable transfer credit:
    • City University accepts credits for military education and training. In addition, City University follows the recommendations of the ACE Guide and of various state-sponsored programs to accredit non-collegiate sponsored instruction. Students enrolled in the A.S. General Studies program must earn a minimum of 25 approved credits at City University. For more information, refer to the City University catalog or contact an advisor.
In other words, mere job or life experience, as you undoubtedly already knew, doesn’t cut it.

My thoughts are you have a good degree from a Regionally Accredited school. Just continue on and get your Bachelor's, you should have many many options ahead of you.

    Good Luck.

I used a bad choice of words with "job / life expereance" while City University accepts credits for military education and training, I would not call it formal education. What I was tryiny to pull from this was that only 5 courses were required. I feel the rest of the credit came from me just doing my job.

Military education and training is about as formal as it gets. :D

    The whole point is

1 C.U. is RA meaning they have to continue to meet the standards set by RAs.

    2. They have established AND PUBLISHED academic regulations that you can look up in their catalog.

    3. The fact that you were able to transfer in credit from your military training and complete 5 classes to get the degree is no issue at all.

    Congratulations on your accomplishment!

I agree with the comment to continue on to get your undergrad degree. While an AS will open doors, a BS will open more. It is posible to finish the bachelors in a short time and completely online.

I got my AA from UoP and was only required to take one class. The majority of the course work came from CLEP's and military.
