    Hey there everyone.

I've only a few quick questions on this Vancouver University Worldwide consortia and other schools.

While checking thru several webpages on canadian universities, I've come across several directories that actually had Van Univ on their list. (Ie: www.uwaterloo.ca/canu)

Are they Legit? They claim to have Canadian & US charity status.
Moreover, offer degree's on the basis of prior learning assessment & recognition of external experiences.

Second question: Inexpensive entirely online/distance education.

While looking at previous threads, i found some containing info on UNISA (South Africa) as being a very inexpensive yet highly regarded institution.

I was wondering, are there any in western europe that is also inexpensive? or another part of the world with a good source of education?

For cost/quality of an education, it seems third world countries offer the cheapest education yet are relatively recognized.

    Thanks,

Ask yourself: is it a recognized university in Canada? That should tell you all you need to know.

I am not wildly fond of them, since they sued my publisher and their Canadian distributor (but not me) two years ago, because they didn't like what I wrote about them.

The law suit claimed that Bears' Guide was responsible for the loss of untold numbers of students, and income, and virtually ruined the university.

They were suing for a grand US$6,000, probably because that was the maximum in small claims court.

After an exchange of an immense amount of paper, and quite a few hours put in by attorneys, my publisher learned (and pointed out) that you can't sue for these kinds of things in small claims court in British Columbia, and VUI apparently agreed and dropped the suit.

People considering this, or indeed any degree from non-GAAP schools, might wish to go through the exercise of calling the registrar of any nearby school, or group of schools, and asking, "Do you accept this degree?" Same with HR people at any company.

    Dear Mr. Baker:

Thank you for your e-mails of October 3, 2002, sent to the Ministry of
Education, inquiring about the status of Vancouver University Worldwide.
Your inquiries have been forwarded to the Ministry of Advanced Education,
and I have been asked to respond on behalf of the Honourable Shirley Bond,
    Minister of Advanced Education.

There is no authority under the University Act or any other piece of British
Columbia legislation for "Vancouver University" or any of its affiliated
organizations, including "Vancouver University Worldwide", to grant degrees
in British Columbia. Further, the Degree Authorization Act (the Act) was
introduced in the Provincial legislature this spring to provide a mechanism
for private and out of province post-secondary institutions to apply for
Ministerial consent to grant degrees in British Columbia. The Act received
Royal Assent in May 2002, and will come into force later this year. Under
the Act, "Vancouver University" and "Vancouver University Worldwide" would
have to undergo a quality assessment process in order to obtain Ministerial
consent to grant degrees in British Columbia.

Until the provisions of the Act are brought into force, the Private
Post-Secondary Education Commission (PPSEC) remains the agency that oversees
private post-secondary institutions that operate in British Columbia.
Neither "Vancouver University" nor any of its affiliated organizations,
including "Vancouver University Worldwide", are currently registered or
    accredited by PPSEC.
